Late Cascade Goal Sinks Shadow
The biggest hurt was felt by the Spokane Shadow on Saturday night.
In about the second minute of injury time after Spokane and Cascade arrived at the end of regulation in a tie, Wade Fleming’s second goal of the night gave the Surge a 2-1 USISL Premier League Northwest Division victory.
It snapped a four-match winning streak for the Shadow (7-2) and avenged a 6-0 Cascade (6-5) loss a week earlier in Spokane.
All the scoring took place in the final 15 minutes.
Andy Bruno stepped in front of a Cascade pass in the Spokane end 30 minutes into the second half and sent the Shadow off on a 3-on-1 break. Jeff McAllister took the ball up the middle, fed Brian Ching on his left, and Ching found the back of the net with his 10th goal in league play and 13th overall.
Eleven minutes later, after Bruno was called for bringing down Zack Marfell in the box, Fleming scored his first goal on a penalty kick.
Overtime loomed when a clearing attempt by Spokane’s Craig Waibel popped high. Before the ball hit the ground, Fleming struck the winner from 20 yards out.
