Ten years ago: The board of trustees at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., a liberal arts college for the deaf, selected a hearing woman to be school president. Outraged students shut down the campus, forcing the selection of a deaf president instead.

Five years ago: As a standoff at the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas, ended its first week, authorities appealed publicly to David Koresh and his followers to give themselves up.

One year ago: A gunman stole “Tete de Femme,” a million-dollar Picasso portrait, from a London gallery. A week later, the painting was recovered and two suspects arrested. Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II launched the first official royal Web site.
