Bigelow Makes Huge Play As Olympia Trips Mercer Island

Mark Bigelow rebounded a missed free throw and took it the length of the court in 6 seconds for the winning layup as Olympia (25-1) defeated defending state champion Mercer Island (26-3) 52-50 Friday in a semifinal game in the boys 3A State basketball tournament in the Seattle Kingdome.

The Islanders had a chance to break a 50-50 tie with 6.1 seconds left, but senior guard Elliott Prasse-Freeman missed two free throws, setting up Bigelow’s deciding basket.

Sophomore guard Ricky Frazier hit two free throws with 2:37 left to give Rainier Beach a semifinal victory over Mount Vernon in the Class 3A boys state basketball tournament.

Rainier Beach (26-2) will face Olympia (25-1) for the title tonight.

Mount Vernon (24-2), which lost to Mercer Island in last year’s final, will face the Islanders for third and sixth places.

Doug Wrenn scored 25 points and Gene Woodard chipped in 23, shooting an impressive 10 for 13 from the floor, to lead the Irish (25-4) to a loser-out victory over the Seagulls (21-7).

The 6-foot-7 Wrenn, who is bound for UW in the fall, has 55 points in three games to lead O’Dea, which was 33-for-66 from the field.

Sam Nunez led Everett with 18 points.

Senior post Jozsef Szendrei scored 23 points and had nine rebounds to lead the Thunderbirds (21-6) to a loser-out win over the Highlanders (22-7).

Tumwater shot 65 percent from the field (24-for-37), but had 24 turnovers which kept Hazen in the contest for most of the game.

Senior forward Nadja Morgan scored 20 points to lead four players in double figures as Blanchet (25-4) handed West Valley of Yakima (25-1) its first loss of the year, in the semifinals of the Class 3A girls state basketball tournament in the Kingdome.

Morgan, who led the Braves to state titles in 1995 and 1996, was 10 for 18 from the field and pulled down 11 rebounds. Blanchet was 25 for 50 from the field in beating the cold-shooting Rams.

Blanchet plays Shorewood tonight for the championship.
