Devils Veteran Hurt

Associated Press

New Jersey Devils center Doug Gilmour will have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and could be out for up to two weeks, a team spokesman said Friday.

Gilmour, the Devils’ second-leading scorer, is scheduled for surgery today. The 15-year veteran was injured Thursday night in a collision with Boston Bruins defenseman Grant Ledyard.

“It was when I was kind of twisted,” Gilmour said. “I went behind him and I think his stick might have got caught.”

Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said the operation would be the best way to determine the extent of Gilmour’s injury.

The Devils on Friday also recalled center Sergei Brylin from Albany of the American Hockey League.

Ex-goalie to coach

Former Buffalo Sabres goaltender Clint Malarchuk was named coach of the International Hockey League’s Las Vegas Thunder, replacing Chris McSorley.

McSorley, the older brother of San Jose Sharks enforcer Marty McSorley, resigned today after his team went 27-30-6.

On the ice

Dominik Hasek’s shutout streak and Buffalo’s 13-game unbeaten streak both came to an end Friday night as Trevor Linden scored two goals in the New York Islanders’ 4-2 victory over the Sabres in Buffalo.

Hasek, who led the Czech Republic to the gold medal at the Olympics, came into the game with back-to-back shutouts in victories over Washington and the New York Rangers before Linden ended the streak at 144 minutes, two seconds.

Jeff O’Neill’s second goal of the game 2:24 into overtime lifted the visiting Carolina Hurricanes to a 5-4 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.
