Area Students Earn College Scholarships

Inland Northwest students have received scholarships to area colleges:

Christopher Sweeney, a chemistry major at Gonzaga University, is one of 10 students statewide to receive a $3,000 scholarship from the United Parcel Service Foundation’s educational endowment fund.

He is the son of Susan Sweeney and Thomas Martini of Spokane.

Andrea Renford, a freshman at Washington State University, received a $1,000 George Norin Scholarship for academic merit in pharmacy.

Renford is a member of Kappa Psi professional pharmaceutical fraternity, Associated Students of Pharmacy and Phi Eta Sigma national honor society.

She is the daughter of John and Peggy Renford, Spokane, and a 1995 graduate of North Central High School.

Five Eastern Washington University incoming students received $2,000 Presidential Scholarships based on academic merit:

Shawnah Barnes, daughter of Mark and Nita Barnes, Spokane, is a 1996 graduate of Mead High School.

Keith Ross, son of Lanny Ross and Bernie Ross and a 1997 graduate of Mead High School, is majoring in mathematics and education.

Maya Carman, daughter of Ted and Katherine Carman, is a 1996 graduate of Ferris High School.

Megan French, daughter of Dan and Jean French, Spokane, and a 1997 graduate of University High School, is majoring in speech pathology.

Jamie Watkins, daughter of Barry and Nancy Watkins, is a 1997 graduate of Freeman High School.

Michelle Morrow, Ellie Rayner and Ashley Hendrickson were initiated into the Sigma Iota chapter of Kappa Delta sorority at the University of Washington. The women are graduates of Lewis and Clark and Mead high schools.

Doug Cole, a West Valley High School graduate, has been initiated into the Beta Theta Pi international fraternity at Eastern Washington University. He is the son of Bob and Cathy Cole of Spokane.

Tina Elmer, Colbert, with her horse, Zip It Up Easy, was a top-10 finalist in the Amateur Western Riding Class at the American Quarter Horse Association World Championship in Oklahoma City.

Three area students received $1,500 full-tuition scholarships from the Kaiser Aluminum Manufacturing Technology/Skilled Crafts Scholarship Endowment to attend Spokane Community College. They are:

Jason Bishop, Edwall, Wash., a graduate of Christian Heritage School, is studying machine shop technology.

Joshua Lindstrom, Deer Park, a graduate of Riverside High School, is studying electrical maintenance technology.

Jess McClure, a graduate of Davenport (Wash.) High School, is studying electrical maintenance technology.

Stephanie Gentry, Spokane, received a $500 Insurance Women of Puget Sound Scholarship at Washington State University. She is majoring in risk management and insurance.

Gentry, daughter of Mike and Susan Gentry of Spokane, is a 1994 graduate of Mead High School.

Air Force Airman Catherine Feil has been assigned to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. She is a clinical nurse assigned to the 86th Medical Center. Feil is the daughter of Ryan Feil, Spokane, and Virginia Dove, De Soto, Texas.
