Girls Aau Tournaments Will Match Regional Stars

Five regional AAU girls basketball tournaments will be played at West Valley High School this weekend with more talent in one place than at a state tournament.

Sheila Lambert of Chief Sealth, the consensus player of the year, is expected to play for the Spokane Stars 18U team, along with Cori Enghusen of Inglemoor, Roosevelt’s Enjoli Izidor and GSL co-MVP Rikki Jackson of Central Valley.

Other team members include Big Nine MVP Jennifer Schooler of Wenatchee, Katie Davis of Manson, who scored 50 points in a B tournament game; Karie Pruett of Ferris, all-GSL first team; and Alison Asher of state-placed Lake City of Coeur d’Alene.

Although Brianne Jolley of 2A champion Lakeside, a Seattle Post-Intelligencer all-state pick, is on the team, this weekend she’ll be playing for the Spokane Falls Elite..

The tournaments are national qualifiers. Spokane has 18U, 17U, 16U, 14U and 12U competition. Other girls tourneys are in Yakima. The boys events are next weekend.

The 17U Spokane Stars include Amy George of Ferris, the GSL coMVP with Jackson; PI all-stater Heather Reichmann of King’s in Seattle, and top players from Oregon, Idaho and Montana, as well as the best players from area teams.

Games begin Friday evening and continue Saturday and Sunday.

Catching up with times

There is a proposal in Washington to eliminate the 30-second shot clock for girls basketball. Another would add a shot clock for boys.

Washington is one of five states to use a 30-second shot clock for girls. (The others are California, Maryland, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.) Only five states use a shot clock for boys, California (35 seconds), Idaho (35), Massachusetts (30), New York (35) and Rhode Island (35).
