Popular Campground Closed For Overhaul

From Staff And Wire Reports

The popular Emerald Creek Campground will be closed next summer to allow for a major overhaul, including easier recreational vehicle use.

The campground is located south of Idaho Highway 3, between Santa and Clarkia. Its closure will mean people will have to use either the Cedar Creek Campground on State Highway 3, the Giant White Pine Campground, or the Laird Park Campground. White Pine and Laird Park are along Idaho Highway 6.

The project is expected to cost between $100,000 and $250,000. It includes widening the curves on the campground roads and paving the roads. Parking spurs will be expanded and resurfaced with gravel. New toilets, fire rings, picnic tables, tent pads and other amenities will be added.

People will still be allowed to dig for garnets in the Emerald Creek Garnet Area from May 23 through Labor Day except for Wednesday and Thursday.
