Dar Awards Two Men For Community Service

Two men were honored with Excellence in Community Service Awards from the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Esther Reed Chapter.

Howard Pettibone was cited for citizenship. He has worked with the Boy Scouts of America for 39 years, guided 31 boys in achieving Eagle Scout awards and led 19 high-adventure trips, including a 50-mile backpack trip in the Glacier Peak Wilderness.

Chad Eastep, a security guard at the Ridpath Hotel, was recognized for heroism when his intervention during a 1995 shooting in the coffee shop saved lives.

Lizabeth Wells’ poem, “That Man,” has been published in the book “A Lasting Mirage,” compiled by the National Library of Poetry.

Wells has been writing for seven years.

Coast Guard Seaman Apprentice Beth Rasmussen graduated from the Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J.

Rasmussen, a 1996 graduate of Ferris High School, is the daughter of Bruce and Catherine Rasmussen, Spokane.

Marine Lance Cpl. Ryan Paikuli, was promoted to his present rank while serving with the 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Paikuli, a 1996 graduate of Medical Lake High School, was promoted for sustained superior job performance and proficiency.

Air Force Airman Justin Koerner graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Koerner is the son of Tammy and Bill Henshaw, Cheney, and a 1997 graduate of Cheney High School.

Ritzville (Wash.) Future Farmers of America once again won the parliamentary procedure contest and became national champions at the National FFA Convention.

This year’s team included Erin Weber, Jamie Wellsandt, Louie Mock, Stephanie Southwick, Veronica Schoesler, Jim Shepard, Tiffany Deking, Crystal Walli and advisor Mike Schrag.

Several Inland Northwest students have been accepted into the Washington State University’s Honor Program. This program attracts students who are serious about academics and active in student activities.

The students, 1997 high school graduates, are listed by hometown.

Cheney: Nicole Hillyard, daughter of Carole Folsom, Cheney, and Gene Hillyard, Chewelah, Wash.

Chewelah: Christian Pickens, son of Juanita and Carl Pickens. Colfax: Keely Carroll, daughter of Dana and Bill Carroll.

Colton: Bryce Weber, son of Lynn and Dave Weber, Uniontown, Wash.

Colville: Samara Bidstrup, daughter of Lisa Kostelak and Bill Bibstrup; Samantha Henderson, daughter of Shirley and Roy Henderson; and Kara McConnell, daughter of JoAnne and Bill McConnell.

Creston: Jerico Cairns, son of Suzanne Burress, Moses Lake, and Tim Cairns, Creston, Wash.

Deer Park: Kristen Coles, daughter of Laurie and Timothy Coles; and Anneliese Ogden, daughter of Linda Hendrix, Deer Park and Dave Ogden, Spokane.

Ephrata: Peter Funk, son of Lacrie and Tim Funk; and Matthew Moore, son of Karen and Michael Moore.

Farmington: Heather Fisher, daughter of Valerie and Loren Fisher.

Liberty Lake: Kendra Leyda, daughter of Julienne and Robert Leyda.

Medical Lake: Tria Tschirley, daughter of Debra Tschirley, Medical Lake, and Craig Tschirley, Spokane.

Othello: Patrick Valdez, son of Bonnie and Frederick Valdez.

Palouse: Andra Parsons, daughter of Janelle and Reg Parsons; and Tina Greenwalt, daughter of Kim and Herbert Greenwalt.

Pullman: Melissa Carlson, daughter of Eunice and Terry Carlson; Aron Cummings, son of Susan and Thomas Cummings; Kurt Druffel, son of Karna and Wayne Druffel; Mike Hobbs, son of Elizabeth and John Hobbs; and Ray Huffaker, son of Ann and Ray Huffaker.

Christopher Koehler, son of Carol Turinski and Thomas Koehler; Kimberly Ledgerwood, daughter of Cindy and P. Ray Ledgerwood; Serign Mass Marong, son of Alice Marong; and Camille McElwain, daughter of Karen and Terry McElwain.

Lisa Morse, daughter of Jean and Gerald Morse; Andrew O’Fallon, son of Elaine and James O’Fallon; Karl Olsen, son of Marsha and Robert Olsen; and Stephanie Schweitzer, daughter of Mary and Edmund Schweitzer.
