Candidate Pulls Out Of School Board Race

The race for a seat on the Bonner County school board just got a little less competitive. Candidate Jack Givens has pulled out.

Givens was challenging incumbent Jim Cooper. That leaves only one contested school board race in Priest River between Eric Eldenburg and Leonard Parenteau.

Givens apparently dropped out of the race because he has a son who is a teacher in the district. The state has a rule that does not allow the spouse of a teacher to sit on the school board.

It was questionable if Givens had a conflict with his son working for the district, and would have been prevented from holding the post. To avoid any controversy Givens decided to pull out of the race.

One current school board member, Blaine Stevens, has a son-in-law working in the district. He has been criticized for not abstaining from some votes that indirectly involved his son-in-law.
