Find What’S Draining Your Energy

Nancy Huseby Bloom

Dear Nancy: I’m young, unmarried and have a stable position in a large company. I’ve had this dream repeatedly over the last three years and it’s beginning to concern me. - Jim

I’m lying in bed alone and for some reason I’m driven to gritting my teeth very strenuously, especially those in back. Slowly, one at a time, they begin to fall out of my mouth. I feel no pain, but some discomfort. I get up and go to the bathroom and sit there on the toilet, grinding my teeth and spitting them out. Blood pours out of my mouth and I just continue. I know this is bad for me and I shouldn’t be doing it, but I keep going. For some reason, I just can’t stop.

Dear Jim: Loss of teeth in dreams is not uncommon and yet it’s one of the most disturbing dreams a person can have. There are many theories about teeth dreams, including:

A warning to see your dentist! Dreams like this can be very literal. Do you physically grit your teeth and unknowingly cause them great harm?

Teeth enable us to chew and can be symbolic of “chewing something over” in our minds to better understand it. So, their loss might depict the inability to understand a given situation or person in your life.

A sign of the dreamer’s fear of aging or of being unattractive.

Teeth can be a symbol of aggression or assertiveness. The loss of them may have to do with the lost sense of power in one’s life.

An inner feeling of having “lost face” or of being humiliated in some way.

In your dream, you are aware you are causing the problem by gritting your teeth. In other words, you are not a victim of someone else’s brutality or a strange phenomenon. It is you who is doing the damage to yourself!

The question is, how do you damage yourself in life? Is an addiction taking hold of you and causing you to symbolically “grit your teeth” or behave compulsively? Addictions take many forms - food, drugs, work, relationships, spending, etc.

Blood is an archetypal symbol of the life force. What is causing you to lose yours? It’s time to stop the bleeding, Jim. You need to be open and honest with yourself to find what is draining your energy. You may want to seek guidance from a friend, minister or therapist.

Tips for readers: “The most important book you will ever read on dreams is your own dream journal,” says Robert Moss in his wonderful book “Conscious Dreaming.” And it’s true: after learning the basics and discovering your personal language of dreams, your journal can be your sole guide (and your soul guide) for nurturing an incredibly intimate relationship with yourself.

Blank journals come in many styles and sizes, so be sure to pick one that’s attractive to you. You can even purchase a spiral-bound notebook and decorate the outside with pictures or quotes that have special meaning for you.

It’s important to date each entry. You will find some of your dreams are precognitive which will give you the ability to look back and see exactly when the dream took place in relationship to the actual event.

You’ll find that you are really psychic!
