Ten years ago: An eight-day strike by workers at the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk, Poland, ended without an agreement. French President Francois Mitterrand named Socialist Michel Rocard to be premier following Mitterrand’s decisive victory in France’s presidential election.

Five years ago: Members of the Senate Armed Services Committee visited the Norfolk Naval Base in Virginia for a hearing on the issue of homosexuals in the military; most of the sailors said they favored keeping the ban on gays.

One year ago: President Clinton signed modest drug-fighting and trade agreements with Caribbean leaders in Barbados. Lebanese of all faiths welcomed Pope John Paul II on his first visit to their country.
