WSU Dominates Its Invitational

College track and field

Washington State won 26 of 34 events in the Cougar Invitational track and field meet Saturday at Mooberry Track in Pullman.

WSU’s Rasto Kiplangat won the men’s 800 meters in 1 minute, 48.35 seconds to qualify for the NCAA championships.

The Cougars’ Ian Waltz won the men’s discus with a throw of 192 feet, 1 inch and the shot put with a toss of 59-2-1/4.

Idaho’s Nikki Scheibe won the women’s discus at 142-1.

Second-place finishers for Idaho were: Amukela Gwebu (men’s triple jump); Melanie Kreizenback (women’s pole vault); Shana Ball (women’s shot put); Heather Paul (women’s high jump); Jamie Stone (women’s 1500); Anna Deery (women’s 400); and Debbie Ogden (women’s 200).

North Idaho’s Jim Noble placed second in the men’s long jump with a leap of 21-10-1/4. NIC’s Holly Gabbert took second in the 400 hurdles with a 1:06.67 clocking.

Community Colleges of Spokane’s Lasina Smith won the women’s 400 with a time of 57.51.

Vandals high jumper Hugo Munoz tied a school record at the Modesto Relays in Modesto, Calif.

Munoz cleared 7-3 to finish second and tie Bob Peterson’s outdoor record set in 1979.

Idaho’s Adekunle Adejuyigbe ran a season-best 47.20 in the men’s 400. His previous best was 47.22.

UI’s Felix Kamangiria took second in the 400 with a 46.78 and Derek Klinge won the 800 in 1:51.70.

Olympic decathlon champion Dan O’Brien, working on some of his individual events, ran second in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 13.53.

O’Brien ran 10.52 in the 100 meters, his best season-opening time in the event.

He said he’s gearing up to compete in the decathlon at the Goodwill Games in New York in July.

Idaho’s Bernd Schroeder ran a career-best 3:45.08 in the men’s 1500 at the Stanford Relays in Palo Alto, Calif., on Friday.

Klinge ran a 1:49.33 in the 800, also a career best.

Whitworth’s Chet Doughty won the men’s long jump with a leap of 22-11 at the NAIA Pacific Northwest regional meet in Monmouth, Ore.

Western Oregon University’s John Knight was named Pacific Northwest Region coach of the year for both men and women. Western Oregon is sending 15 athletes and two relay teams to the NAIA National Meet in Tulsa, Okla.
