Local Golfers Make Sectionals

Two golfers with Spokane ties are among the six who advanced out of the U.S. Open Local Qualifying in Gig Harbor, Wash., Monday to sectional qualifying in San Francisco.

Amateur Darren Slackman, a Mead High School graduate and member of the University of Washington golf team, and pro Richard Zokol from Vancouver, British Columbia, shared medalist honors with 2-under-par 70s on a cold, wet day at Canterwood Golf & Country Club.

Michael Rorholm of Liberty Lake shared fifth with a par 72.

Also advancing to the sectional qualifier are Raymond Schuler of Tacoma and Ryan Earl of Olympia, who shot 71s; and Mick Barnett, Redmond, Wash., at 72.

Six others with Inland Northwest ties who failed to move on are: Chad Disney, Warden, 74; Stu Aden, Tumwater, Wash., 76; Tim Rypien, Spokane, 77; Chris Mitchell, Tumwater, 78; Chris Johnson, Richland, 81; and Colin Guhlke, Harrington, 82.

Basketball

Two North Idaho College women’s basketball players are continuing their careers at four-year schools.

Forward Julie Grohs has orally committed to play at Montana StateNorthern. Forward Barrie Jensen has committed to play at Western Oregon.

Grohs averaged 7.9 points per game, while Jensen sported a 9.0 average.
