Ferris Wins Soccer Title
Even power from the heavens couldn’t stop Ferris from claiming the District 8-4A boys soccer championship Tuesday.
Mario Vigil fed Garth Cummings for the deciding goal at 12 minutes as the visiting Saxons (14-5) edged Greater Spokane League champion Shadle Park 1-0 in a match delayed 10 minutes by lightning.
Vigil secured the ball near the Highlanders goal, scooted past two defenders and fed Cummings when Shadle keeper Brandon Kyle came out to defend.
The teams combined for just 11 shots on goal.
Both advance to the first round of the State 4A tournament, at 1 p.m. Saturday. Ferris plays against the Big Nine Conference’s No. 2 team at University High. Shadle (12-4) travels to Big Nine No. 1.
Eisenhower and Pasco play today to determine the Big Nine’s top two berths.
Chris Reynolds scored early on a penalty kick, then added two first-half assists as Cheney defeated visiting East Valley 4-0 for the District 7-3A championship.
Reynolds outran two defenders on his first assist, which went to Chris Oyolokor to give the Blackhawks a 2-0 lead.
Cheney, the Frontier League’s regularseason champion, advances to the first round of the State 3A tournament. The Blackhawks (13-3-1) open at home at 1 p.m. Saturday against Mid-Valley No. 2 Moses Lake (13-6).
EV finished 9-7-2.

Golf
Lani Elston led Ferris to the team championship of the rain-shortened GSL girls all-league meet at Wandermere Golf Course.
Elston tied LC’s Tricia Bassett at 3-under-par 70 as both sank eagles on par-5 holes. Elston won a one-hole playoff.
Ferris’ 303 was the lone team score reported because rain kept some of the field from finishing. The top 34 players will advance to Esmeralda Golf Course at 1 p.m. Thursday.
Co-medalist Josh Johnstone shot a 3-over-par 75 to lead Ritzville to the Bi-County League title at Harrington.

The district tournament is Tuesday at Hangman Valley Golf Course.
