Weber State Sweeps Big Sky

College track

It was sweeps weekend for Weber State at the Big Sky Conference track and field championships in Ogden, Utah.

Weber State edged Cal State Northridge 185-174.5 to win the women’s title on Saturday, while the Weber State men cruised past runner-up Montana 170-124.5

Eastern Washington’s women finished eighth with 31 points, while the men placed sixth with 68 points.

It was a tough day for ex-EWU sprinter Joyce Rainwater.

Rainwater’s Big Sky records in the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints were shattered during the meet’s second day.

Weber State’s Fredi Salahuddin won the 100 in 11.68 seconds, beating Rainwater’s 11.84 mark set in 1994. Celeste Stutheit of Eastern took second with an 11.71 clocking.

Montana’s Brooke Stinson won the 200 with a record time of 23.63. Rainwater held the previous best at 23.84, also set in 1994.

Eastern’s Amber Johnson placed fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:24.32.

The Eagles competed without standout hurdler and high-jumper Seville Broussard, who was sidelined with a stress fracture in one leg.

Eastern’s men notched three third-place finishes in Saturday’s individual events.

Keish Levingston earned one of those with a 10.61 mark in the 100.

Mike Dwyer took third in the 110-high hurdles with a time of 14.28, and Andre Ervin finished third in the high jump by clearing 7 feet, one-half inch.

Eagles relay teams placed second in the 4x100 and third in the 4x400.

Davenport’s Tim Briggs, running for Montana, placed sixth in the 10,000 with a time of 31:18.74.

LaTroya Mucker, Washington State’s sole participant in the Pacific-10 Conference Multi-Events Championships, is in second place after the first day of the women’s heptathlon at Cobb Track and Angell Field in Stanford, Calif.

Stanford’s Tracye Lawyer, defending Pac-10 heptathlon champion, leads the seven-women field after the first day’s four events with 3,602 points. Mucker, a sophomore from Los Angeles, competing in the second heptathlon of her career, accumulated 3,203 points.
