Barbershoppers’ Efforts Recognized Recently
Alden ‘Doc’ Parker, was awarded the Lifetime Babershoppers Award from the Pages of Harmony. ‘Doc’ has been a chorus mentor for the past 37 years and sound man for the Pages of Harmony performances.
Gary Owsley and Don Tipke were both awarded the Barbershoppers of the Year award for their time and efforts.
Lt. Col. Daniel R. Cunningham, a Spokane native and graduate of Gonzaga University’s Reserve Officer Training Corps program, was recognized on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for his outstanding service.
Cunningham retired from the Army last year after serving as a Pentagon liaison to Congress. His mother, Jan Cunningham, lives in Spokane.
Raschelle Freeman, East Wenatchee, was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics.
Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Freeman received a $7,500 grant to improve mathematics education at Robert E. Lee Elementary in East Wenatchee. She received an education degree from Whitworth College and her master’s in arts in mathematics education from Gonzaga University. Her parents are Thomas Rohrback and Gayle Smith, both of Spokane.
Angela Vold, junior at Sprague High School, received the James and Eunice Doty People To People Congressional Award Scholarship. People To People International is an education and cultural exchange organization. Vold has received a Congressional Award, both Bronze and Silver awards and working on her Gold. She will be traveling to England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland in June.
Tracy Grover, Spokane, earned a Master of Science degree in resource management from Central Washington University. Grover also earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Central.
Edward McCormick, Fairchild Air Force Base, received his Master of Science degree in software engineering from Southern Methodist University, Dallas.
Army Privates Tanaya Pace and Buster Honshell graduated from basic military training at Fort Leonard Wood in Waynesville, Mo. Pace is the daughter of Laura Steele of Airway Heights and a 1994 graduate of Medical Lake High School.
Honshell is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Honshell of Spokane.
University High School graduate, Patrick Orthouse, completed Navy boot camp and Machinist Mate ‘A’ school at Great Lakes Naval Station. His parents are Delton and Mary Orthouse of Spokane.
Tiffany Nixon, Odessa, attended The National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. The conference is a leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit.
Gonzaga University nursing Associate Professor Susan Norwood had her book ‘Nurses as Consultants: Essential Concepts and Processes” recognized by the American Journal of Nursing as a Book of the Year. The book was written specifically for nurses who are pursuing graduate degrees and preparing for advanced nursing jobs. Norwood has been at Gonzaga since 1991. She was awarded the Gonzaga University Great Teachers Program Award for Teaching Excellence in 1996 and was named Nurse Practitioner of the Year for 1993.
