Nick Mayer Colfax Year: Junior Sport: Baseball Event: Pitcher

Nick Mayer will be ready for the next challenge after today’s physical therapy session.

Mayer, Colfax’s No. 1 starting pitcher, receives periodic treatments for his ailing back.

He also hyperextended his elbow this spring, but his Bulldogs are rarely in a world of hurt when Mayer (5-1) takes the mound.

Mayer defeated Freeman last Saturday for the District 7-1A title. He’ll be the starter when Colfax (18-3) plays Okanogan at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Region II tourney at Moses Lake. The winner meets Royal City or Dayton for a berth in the State 1A title game.

Mayer takes his baseball seriously. He skipped football and basketball this year to improve on his favorite sport.

The right-hander, batting No. 2, hit .530 with nine home runs this season. His three-run homer against Freeman was the big blow in a 5-4 victory.

Best friend Kyle Warwick, the team’s senior center fielder, hit .568 from the leadoff spot. Sophomores Jordan Maj and Matt Gylling are the other starters. Senior Brad Biagi, an ex-starter, has become the closer.

Mayer, an only child, often has his parents and two sets of grandparents cheering at Bulldogs games. His great-grandparents also lived in Colfax.

His class load this spring included chemistry and advanced algebra/trigonometry.
