Frances (Smith) Moodie Pullman

Visitation for Frances L. (Smith) Moodie, 84, will be from 2 to 5 p.m. today and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman. Funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday at the Pullman Presbyterian Church. Private burial will follow at Pullman City Cemetery.

Mrs. Moodie, who was born in Whiting, Iowa, died Saturday.

She graduated from high school in Stanford, Mont. and graduated from the University of Montana in 1935 with a degree in home economics.

Mrs. Moodie taught home economics in junior high school in Miles City, Mont., for four years before moving to Pullman in 1939 to attend graduate school at Washington State College.

In 1942 she married Charles Moodie in Spokane and, during World War II, the couple moved to Canada where Mrs. Moodie volunteered in the school system and local libraries.

They moved back to Pullman in 1946 and she finished her graduate degree in clothing textiles and home economics.

She was a sewing and home economics instructor at Washington State University during the school year and, during the summer, she worked for the Cooperative Extension program in Colfax.

After her children were born she became a homemaker until the death of her husband in 1970, when she returned to work at Washington State University as a clerk and secretary for various departments including veterinary medicine and anthropology. She retired in 1976.

Mrs. Moodie was a member of P.E.O., Pullman Historical Book Club, Museum of Friends at Washington State University, Pullman Home Economics Association, Washington State University Alumni Association and Delta Delta Delta Sorority.

Survivors include two sons, James Moodie of Pullman and Neil Moodie of San Francisco.

Memorial contributions may be made to the C.D. Moodie Scholarship Fund or to the Frances Moodie Scholarship Fund, both at Washington State University.

Cecil Petrie Lacrosse, Wash.

Service for Cecil Mary Petrie, 68, will be today at 2 p.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mrs. Petrie, who was born in St. Maries, died Thursday.

She grew up in Emida, Idaho, and graduated from St. Maries High School in 1947.

Mrs. Petrie attended Treasure Valley College in Ontario, Ore., and received a degree in secretarial science and accounting. She lived in various towns in Oregon before returning to the St. Maries area.

She worked as a bookkeeper at Emida Cedar and then worked for the Forest Service in Avery, Idaho.

Mrs. Petrie also worked as a financial assistant and secretary to the director of the Marine Science Center in Newport, Ore.

Illness forced her to retire in 1987 and she moved to Lacrosse, Wash., in 1991.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Maries.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Francis; three sons, Steve Petrie of Emida, Michael Petrie of Lacrosse, and Carl Petrie of Oregon; a daughter, Ann Boyer of Delaware; six sisters, Georgette Khosravi of Moscow, Idaho, Margaret Wheeler, Phoebe Sheldon, and Evelyn Zimmerman, all of St. Maries, Caron Foster of Emida, and Sylvia Redl of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Donald Walson Post Falls

Service for Donald S. Walson, 74, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. George’s Catholic Church in Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Walson, who was born in Wyoming, died Friday.

He moved to the Post Falls area in 1946 from Wyoming and worked as a grader at the DeArmond Lumber Mill, retiring in 1971.

Mr. Walson was a member of St. George’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Anna; two sons, Stephen Walson of Coeur d’Alene and Michael Walson of Alaska; five daughters, Virginia Dreger of Wilbur, Wash., Beverly Sutton and Pauline McLean, both of Post Falls, Theresa Duncan of Boise and Bernadine Lee of Spokane; 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Bradley Walton Lynnwood, Wash.

Memorial service for Bradley “Brad” S. Walton, 29, will be at 11 a.m. today at Hennessey Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Walton, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died May 20.

He spent most of his childhood in Spokane and graduated from high school in Kalispell, Mont. He spent four years in Alaska before moving to the Seattle area four years ago.

He worked as an automobile painter.

Survivors include a son, Zaakary Walton of Puyallup, Wash.; his mother and stepfather, Candace and Edward Anderson of Spokane; his father and stepmother, Dennis and Debbie Walton of Kalispell; a sister, Tana Morales of Spokane; a stepbrother, Edward Anderson of Spokane; a stepsister, Jackie Durham of Great Falls, Mont.; his grandparents, Charles and Dorothy Davis of Coeur d’Alene and Benny and Norma Walton of Kalispell.

Charles Juda Spokane

Visitation for Charles S. Juda, 77, will be from noon to 6 p.m. today. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Juda, who was born in Stevensville, Mont., died Sunday.

He was a 51-year Spokane resident and served in the Navy during World War II.

He was a journeyman plumber and was a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 44 and Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.

His wife, Anne, died in 1995.

Survivors include a son, Charles Juda Jr. of Spokane; a daughter, Sharon Wichterman of Deer Park; a sister, Eileen Montague of Seattle; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Florence Ashley Spokane

Funeral for Florence Helen Ashley, 95, will be at 10 a.m. today at Riverside Mausoleum Chapel. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Sheridan, Wyo., Mrs. Ashley died Thursday.

She moved to Spokane in 1938 and was a homemaker. She was a member of Christ’s Gospel Fellowship Church, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Railway Mail Clerks Wives Association.

Her husband, Samuel, died in 1981.

Mrs. Ashley is survived by a daughter, Jean Hutcheson of Otis Orchards; a son, Dean Ashley of Ruston, Wash.; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three greatgreat-grandchildren.

Bernard Marcinowski Spokane

Funeral for Bernard B. Marcinowski, 74, was Tuesday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Marcinowski, who died Thursday, was born in Lancut, Poland.

He worked as an electrician and was a 33-year Spokane resident.

Mr. Marcinowski was a member of the Eagles Lodge, the Moose Lodge and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

His wife, Edythe, died in 1990.

Survivors include two daughters, Debbie Marcinowski of Spokane and Jane Heckt of Enumclaw, Wash.; three brothers; five sisters; and three grandchildren.

Evelyn Woodruff Spokane

Memorial service for Evelyn V. Woodruff, 76, was Tuesday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Woodruff, who was born in Gibbs, Idaho, died Saturday.

She was a homemaker and a 48-year resident of Spokane.

She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Horseman of Greenacres and Helen DeLager of Colfax, Wash.; two sons, Michael Woodruff of Spokane and Lee Zimmer of Anchorage, Alaska; a brother George Braden of Coeur d’Alene; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Robert Tate Colfax, Wash.

Graveside service for Robert L. “Bob” Tate, 78, will be at 2 p.m. today at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Tate, who was born in Colfax, died Friday.

During the 1930s he participated in the cement pouring and sandblasting of the Grand Coulee Dam.

He served with the Air Force during World War II at Foster Field in Texas. After the war he moved back to the Colfax area and worked as a farmer from 1945 until 1952.

In 1952 he moved to Phoenix where he worked for Reynolds Metal Co., where he was a union shop steward. He retired in 1975 and returned to the Colfax area in 1988.

Mr. Tate was a member of the Steptoe Grange.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Leona; three sons, Robert Lee Tate III of North Brunswick, N.J., Gary Tate of Phoenix and Perry Tate of Steptoe, Wash.; three sisters, Ruth Klaus and Janey Mekcel, both of Spokane, and Marguerite Patton of Renton, Wash.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mary (Mack) Gibson Spokane

Memorial service for Mary (Mack) Gibson, 87, was Tuesday at Spokane Valley Church of the Nazarene.

Mrs. Gibson, who died Thursday, was born in Pomeroy, Wash.

She graduated from Pomeroy High School and in 1932 married Gale Gibson.

They moved to Spokane, then lived in Waterville, Wash., from 1942 until 1953, when they returned to Spokane.

Mrs. Gibson worked for the Postal Service in Waterville for a short time and also was a homemaker for many years.

She was a member of the Rebekkah Lodge in Waterville.

Her husband died in 1978.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeanette DeChenne of Spokane; a sister, Dorothy Wainscott of Waterville; and one grandchild.

Gordon Ward Spokane

Funeral for Gordon G. Ward, 87, will be at 3 p.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park, Sunset Chapel. Burial will follow. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ward, a lifetime Spokane resident, died May 20.

He graduated from North Central High School and served with the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He retired from Spokane Storm Windows where he worked as an installer.

He was a member of the Spokane Elks Lodge.

His wife, Winifred, died in 1996.

Mr. Ward is survived by three sisters, Mabel Hansen and Laura Gray, both of Spokane, and Dorothy Jenson of Oregon.

Pauline Ruthven Coeur d’Alene

Service for Pauline Ruthven, 77, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ruthven, who was born in Iowa, died Saturday.

She lived in North Dakota and then moved to Coeur d’Alene and graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1940.

She owned Polly’s Apartments for 30 years and was a charter member of the Coeur d’Alene Eagles Lodge.

Mrs. Ruthven was a member of First Christian Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include her husband, John; a daughter, Patsy Giboney of Seattle; three stepsons, Jack Ruthven of Milton Freewater, Ore., Bob Ruthven of College Place, Wash., and Jim Ruthven of New York.

Carroll Cumbie Spokane

Private burial for Carroll J. Cumbie, 75, was Tuesday at Fairmount Memorial Park. Memorial service followed at Knox Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Cumbie, who died Friday, was born in Brooklyn, Ala.

He served with the Navy during World War II and then became an electrical contractor. He lived in Spokane for 45 years and was a partner in Rod’s Electric and Rainbow Electric.

He was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife Opal; a son, Carroll F. Cumbie of Spokane; a daughter, Elaine Leonard of Lynnwood, Wash.; two brothers, William Cumbie of Tucson, Ariz., and Marcus Cumbie of Grove Hill, Ala.; two sisters, Mary Nell Taylor of Destin, Fla., and Irene Perkins of Silver Springs, Md.; and six grandchildren.

Fern Newkirk Potlatch, Idaho

No service will be held for Fern C. Newkirk. Kramer Funeral Home of Palouse, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Newkirk, who was born in Moscow, Idaho, died Friday. She was 63.

She worked as a cook in Spokane and later as a retail clerk at Lamonts in Spokane.

In 1989 she moved to Potlatch and worked as a cook at the Alpha Gamma Delta house at Washington State University.

Survivors include two sons, Edward Bogar of Spokane and Terry Hunt of North Bend, Ore.; a daughter, Sherry Bogar of Potlatch; a brother, Patrick Smith of Springfield, Mo.; two sisters, Louann Poston of Omak, Wash., and Marguerite Espy of Potlatch; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the North Palouse Veterinarian Clinic in Potlatch.

Jack Birchill Spokane

Memorial service for Jack W. Birchill, 74, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Birchill, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Thursday.

He graduated from North Central High School and then served in the Air Force during World War II as a member of the Air Force Band.

After the war, he played professionally for 16 years with several big bands, before retiring from the Franke Carel band.

Mr. Birchill later worked as an insurance agent for many years and achieved the designation of CLU.

He was a member of the Spokane Estate Planning Council, the Musician’s Union Local 105, and the Spokane Valley Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years Colleen; two daughters, Shannon Moser and Shelly Pederson, both of Spokane; and four grandchildren.
