Battle Over Memorial
When Dolores Reed served in the Army during the Korean War, she wore a button-up shirt with a man’s tie and a simple skirt, sometimes fatigues. Reed says she and other women in the service never donned flowing, form-fitting frocks like that worn by a statue being crafted to honor New York’s female war veterans. Women veterans critical of the memorial have launched a letter-writing campaign asking Gov. George Pataki to scrap the memorial. The Pataki administration had no immediate comment Tuesday. State officials say the nine-foot-statue is intended to depict Lady Liberty.
