Dragons Gain District Soccer Final
Dan Dhillon and Eric Johnson had one goal and one assist apiece Thursday as St. George’s defeated Sunnyside Christian 4-2 at Albi Stadium to advance to the title match of the boys District 7 1A/B soccer tournament.
The Dragons (11-1-1) stormed to a 4-0 lead late in the first half.
St. George’s plays for the title at 1 p.m. today at Albi against Wahluke, which defeated Northwest Christian 3-1 in the day’s other match.
Wahluke led 2-0 when NWC’s John Proffitt scored early in the second half. Eric Bell of NWC (10-4) nearly tied the match with 15 minutes left on a shot that hit the post.
Today’s winner moves to the state semifinals next Friday at Auburn.
College wrestling
Ricks College dominated the middle and upper weights during a 31-14 win over North Idaho in a Region 18 meet at Rexburg, Idaho.
NIC jumped to an 11-0 lead as Shaun Williams pinned Brian Bamb in the first round at 125 pounds and Scott Rasmussen scored a 22-7 technical fall over Len Gurney at 133.
The Vikings began their comeback with Aaron Polkowske’s third-round pin of Troy Sabot at 141.
Ricks took a 14-11 lead on Josh Wright’s 12-3 major decision over Justin Springer at 157.
NIC still had a chance to win after Curtis Owen (174) defeated Hank Weiss 7-3 to cut Ricks’ edge to 19-14.
But the Vikings won two close matches, 4-1 for Steve Babcock at 184 and 3-2 for Kent Bowman at 197, to clinch the win.
College volleyball
The University of Idaho is one step closer to a seventh consecutive winning season after defeating North Texas 15-8, 11-15, 15-10, 15-9 in a Big West Conference match at Denton, Texas.
The Vandals (14-14 overall, 7-8 Big West), who have defeated the Eagles (3-22, 0-15) in seven consecutive matches, play their final match at New Mexico State on Saturday.
Senior middle blocker Jessica Moore finished with a match-high 16 kills, giving her 1,448 for her career. Moore needs 15 in the final match to surpass Tzvetelina Yanchulova for No. 2 in school history. Kelly Gibbons is the record-holder with 1,524.
Moore also had a season-best eight blocks to go with a .323 hitting percentage and four service aces.
UI’s other senior, Beth Craig, collected her 22nd double-double of the year with 11 kills and 11 digs.
