First quarter

Nian Taylor 62-yard pass from Paul Mencke.

Rian Lindell kick. Six plays, 95 yards, 2:01. Kevin Brown ripped off 25 yards on two runs, taking the Cougars out of the shadow of their goal line. Following a holding penalty, Mencke entered for his first play of the game and found Taylor wide-open for the score. WSU 14, Stanford 0 Jason White 75-yard pass from Mencke. Three plays, 73 yards, 1:25. After consecutive plays of negative yardage, Mencke found White across the middle.

Randy Fasani 1-yard run. Kevin Miller kick. Nine plays, 65 yards, 3:53. After Todd Husak and Brian Allen led the Cardinal down the field, Fasani came in at quarterback and dove in on a fourth-and-goal from the 1.

DeRonnie Pitts 11-yard pass from Husak. Miller kick. Seven plays, 65 yards, 2:34. The Cougars forced the Cardinal to punt after its drive stalled at the WSU 30. But an illegal participation penalty on WSU gave Stanford a first and 10 at the Cougars 15. Three plays later they scored.

Brown 55-yard run. Lindell kick. The Cougars were stuck with third and 19 when Birnbaum hit Nian Taylor for 34 yards to take the ball to the WSU 45. The next play Brown went over left tackle and broke free.

Fourth quarter

White 21-yard pass from Mencke. Lindell kick. Two plays, 31 yards, :38. After the Cougar defense forced the Cardinal to punt from its own 4. Lamont Thompson returned the punt to the 31-yard line and from there the Cougars had no problem going in.

Jon Eide 11-yard run. Miller kick. Six plays, 64 yards, 1:51. Backup quarterback Joe Borchard led the Cardinal right back following the Cougars score. Borchard kept the drive alive on a 21-yard scramble, then hit Jeff Allen and Troy Walters on consecutive pass plays for 20 yards.

Walters 80-yard pass from Borchard. Miller kick. One play, 80 yards, Walters got by Dee Moronkola and Borchard delivered the ball on target.

Miller 32-yard field goal. Four plays, three yards, :29. The Cougars gave the ball up on downs allowing Stanford to put the game out of reach with a field goal.
