Area Students Receive Ewu Awards

Six Spokane-area students received $2,000 Presidential Scholarships at Eastern Washington University as incoming freshmen. The awards are based on academic merit.

The students, all high school graduates last spring, their parents and high schools are:

Karina Berven, daughter of Gary and Anita Berven, was copy editor of the Mead yearbook and a member of the school’s Environmental Science Club.

Stephanie Nottom, daughter of Diana Nottom, was a member of Central Valley’s marching band, and jazz and a capella choirs.

Stayce Sullivan, daughter of Charles and Deborah Sullivan, was in University High’s choir and worked as a sports trainer and teacher’s aide.

Jamie M. Peterson, daughter of Stan and Michele Peterson, was involved with volleyball, softball and cross-country at Reardan and was a member of Future Business Leaders of America and the National Honor Society.

Erika Holding, daughter of Steve and Marsha Holding, and a Central Valley graduate, has been a tutor for Top Notch Tutoring for two years.

William Tierney, son of Bill and Jimi Tierney, participated in track and was captain of the cross-country team at Ferris.

Paul Foster has been promoted to chief petty officer in the Navy. He is an instructor at Naval Air Station, Lemoore, Calif., where he was named Instructor of the Year.

Foster is the son of Beverly Foster, Spokane.

Dana Rivers, 15, was a state finalist in the Miss Washington American Teen Pageant in September. She is the daughter of David and Diana Stanley, Elk.

Army Pfc. Deidre M. Sealy has received the Army Achievement Medal for meritorious service. She is a supply armorer with the 54th Engineer Battalion in Bamberg, Germany.

Sealy is a 1993 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School and the daughter of Peggy Connor, Spokane.

Five Spokane students graduated last spring from Portland State University. The students and their degrees are:

Nancy A. Carney, Ph.D., psychology; Jonathan M. Carollo, master’s degree in social work; Michael L. Grossman, social science; Robin A. Kendall, science; Jill M. Shelley, master’s degree of education.

Joseph Schindler, a 1995 East Valley High School graduate, has received the Busby and Wadley Memorial scholarships, totaling $6,000, from Hillsdale College in Michigan.

He is the son of Jim and Lynn Schindler, Otis Orchards.
