Moses Lake Too Much For Prosser Again

Prosser won the game for the Mid Valley League trophy, but once again Moses Lake is playing for the big trophy.

The seventh-ranked Chiefs, behind star quarterback B.J. Garbe, trounced the second-ranked Mustangs 33-13 at Lampson Stadium Friday night. It marked the second straight year the league runner-up beat the league champion in the State 3A football playoffs.

Garbe ran for four touchdowns, three in the third quarter when Moses Lake (9-2) capitalized on turnovers to break open the game.

“Coming out, we were ready to go,” said Garbe, who ran for 250 yards on 27 carries. “We knew what we were going to do before the game and we did it.”

A howling wind, blowing so hard chain-link fences looked solid because of the maple leaves plastered against them, particularly hampered Prosser (10-1), a passing team behind Troy Thomas. He threw two touchdown passes, but was picked off three times.

But it was a fumble that started Prosser’s downfall. The Mustangs, trailing 14-7, fumbled on its own 16 on the first possession of the second half and Garbe recovered. That led to Garbe’s second 1-yard TD plunge of the game. On the next possession, the Chiefs picked off a pass and Garbe capitalized with a 7-yard scoring run.

The Chiefs play Capital on Friday night at 7 at Lampson. Capital defeated Renton 14-0.
