Heisman watch

With Syracuse and quarterback Donovan McNabb losing on Thursday and UCLA quarterback Cade McNown relying on his running game against Washington State, all eyes were on Texas tailback Ricky Williams.

A week after gaining 318 yards, Williams did himself 32 better, gaining 350 and scoring five touchdowns against Iowa State.

Williams jumped to fourth place on the NCAA career rushing list with 5,241 yards, past Archie Griffin of Ohio State, who had 5,177 yards. His five touchdowns moved him one past the career rushing touchdowns record of 64 set by Anthony Thompson of Indiana in 1986-89.

The cutting edge

Ohio State quarterbacks coach Tim Salem got carried away while celebrating a score in a 28-9 victory over Penn State.

Salem broke the large plate-glass window in the coaches’ section of the press box after Michael Wiley scored on a 20-yard pass play from Joe Germaine to put the top-ranked Buckeyes ahead 14-3 late in the first half.

Witnesses said Salem jumped up and pumped his hands into the window. Glass flew around the area and workers had to use tape to prevent more shards from falling.

During his postgame interview, head coach John Cooper said he was pleased that the Buckeyes suffered no injuries. Asked about Salem, he laughed and said, “Coach Salem doesn’t count. He’ll be all right.”

Oh Shay, can you run?

Emporia State’s Brian Shay set two NCAA records when he rushed for 228 yards in a 25-24 loss to Truman State.

It was the 12th time Shay rushed for more than 200 yards in a game, breaking the all-divisions record of 11 shared by several players, including Marcus Allen of Southern California and Johnny Bailey of Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Shay gained 324 all-purpose yards against Truman State, giving him 7,847 for his career. That broke the NCAA Division II mark of 7,803 by Bailey.

Streaks, the good

UCLA’s Cade McNown, with 205 yards passing in the fourth-ranked Bruins’ 49-17 victory over Washington State, has passed for more than 200 yards in a school-record 18 consecutive games.

Streaks, the bad

Navy has lost 22 in a row against ranked opponents. Navy’s last win against a ranked opponent was over No. 20 Virginia on Sept. 28, 1985.

Streaks, the ugly

After losing 18-13 to Ball State, Northern Illinois’ Division I-worst losing streak stands at 22.

The last word …

“We’re extremely fortunate to win the ballgame. I never had a ballgame like this in my life. The Gators don’t play like champions any more.”

- Florida coach Steve Spurrier following the eighth-ranked Gators’ 16-10 victory over Alabama.
