Benewah County St. Maries
The Army Corps of Engineers approved the Riverdale levee after almost two years of improvement work. The Corps has agreed to pay 80 percent of the repair cost if the levee breaks. If the levee had not been accepted by the Corps, the local government would have had to pay the entire cost. The Riverdale levee is the fourth in Benewah County to meet Corps standards.
Bonner County Priest River
Dr. Perry Haugen of the Eye Clinic of Spokane will be the guest speaker at the Priest River area diabetic support group meeting Monday at the Senior Citizen Center. Haugen will present information on preventing eye disorders and general eye care for diabetics. The public is invited to attend the meeting, which will begin at 7 p.m.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
The Fry Healthcare Foundation is sponsoring its third annual “Reading’s Fun Book Fair” Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the administration wing of Boundary Community Hospital. Popular familyoriented books will be available at a 50 to 70 percent savings. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Fry Healthcare Foundation.
Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
The Kootenai County Food Bank received a $1,800 donation from the Coeur d’Alene Athletic Charitable Trust. The money will help stock the food bank, which assisted more than 900 people in August. Food bank contributions may be sent to Community Action Agency at 4942 E. Industrial Ave., Coeur d’Alene.
Latah County Moscow
Nearly 100 teachers attended a Sept. 22 Moscow School Board meeting to negotiate a union contract. The Moscow Education Association and the district agreed to call in a federal fact finder to help with negotiations. The teachers agreed to start back to work without a contract. Several matters have been tabled, but the remaining issue of contention this year is compensation.
Shoshone County Silver Valley
After receiving a grant two years ago, the Silver Valley Seniors bought a 15-passenger van. The seniors had to pay 20 percent of the van’s cost, about $4,900, while the rest was paid for with a federal grant. The group uses the van to transport members who don’t like to drive in the ice and snow, along with providing homedelivered meals. The van also allows seniors to be driven to meal sites and helps them run errands.
WASHINGTON
Pend Oreille County Metaline
Local citizens with questions about the reopening of the Pend Oreille zinc and lead mine north of town are invited to a free picnic today. Sponsored by Cominco American, the event will explain the mine’s future. With its Sullivan Mine in Kimberly, British Columbia, running low on ore, Cominco American is hoping the Pend Oreille mine will be a suitable replacement. The picnic runs from noon until 6 p.m. at Metaline’s Waterfront Park.
Spokane County Cheney
The new Cheney Alternative School will have an open house from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday in the Fisher Building, 520 Fourth St. Lead teacher Randy Elam will talk with interested parents and students.
Whitman County Colfax
The Whitman County Employees and Teamsters Union will conduct a county candidates forum Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Colfax’s public works auditorium. Questions for the candidates will come from a panel of county employees and from the audience. For more information, contact Larry Kenck at (509) 326-9504.

Lincoln County Libby
The Lincoln County Ensemble meets Mondays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church. The ensemble is a volunteer organization with membership open to Lincoln County residents at least 16 years old with a desire to explore choral music of all types.
