In college football this year, No. 2 doesn’t have to try harder. It just has to be No. 2.

A ranking of second in the Bowl Championship Series standings, scheduled for an early November release, gets you a date in the national championship game in the Fiesta Bowl, and the major players for that spot became more clear after Saturday’s games.

UCLA, Tennessee and Kansas State all collected road victories against ranked teams and jumped ahead of the team that didn’t - Nebraska - to improve their positions.

The Bruins broke open a close game in the fourth quarter and crushed No. 10 Arizona 52-28. UCLA rose to No. 2 in the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN coaches’ polls, its highest ranking since 1988.

Tennessee used two Tee Martin touchdown passes in the third quarter and subdued No. 7 Georgia 22-3. The Vols moved to third in AP and fourth in the coaches’ poll.

Kansas State holds the opposite places after its 16-9 triumph at No. 14 Colorado.
