Doe Plants Cleared In Leukemia Study
A study has found no link between childhood leukemia and fathers who worked at Department of Energy nuclear facilities.
The study by Dr. Lowell Sever of Battelle Memorial Institute in Seattle looked at children living in counties near three DOE nuclear sites - Oak Ridge, Hanford Nuclear Reservation and Idaho Falls.
“We found that there is no evidence of a link between children cancer risk and the father’s radiation work at the Department of Energy sites included in this study,” Sever wrote.
“These results did not change if each site was looked at alone or all together with other sites.”
The work was funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Centers for Disease Control.
A 1990 report in England suggested a higher incidence of leukemia among children whose fathers worked at the Sellafield nuclear plant. A later analysis isolated the higher cancer risk to children born in a nearby town.
