Ferris Answers Like A Champion
Many questions were answered after Tuesday’s Greater Spokane League volleyball play.
Who is the GSL champ? Ferris (17-0) claimed that honor for the third consecutive year with a 15-12, 15-5, 15-10 win at University (5-11).
Who will join Ferris at the Region IV-4A Tournament? Mead (14-2) clinched at least a tie for second place, the other placing that guarantees a regional berth, with a 15-5, 15-1, 15-6 win at Mt. Spokane (0-17).
Shadle Park (12-4), after a 15-4, 15-11, 17-15 win at North Central, is two games behind Mead with two to go. Mead plays NC (5-11) Thursday.
Who will and won’t go to the District 8-4A Tournament? U-Hi and NC were eliminated after Lewis and Clark (8-8) won at Central Valley, 15-2, 15-5, 15-9. CV is 2-14.
District opens Oct. 29 at Mt. Spokane High, with loser-out matches between No. 3 and No. 6, and No. 4 and No. 5. Shadle has a two-match lead over Rogers (10-6) for the No. 3 spot. LC and Gonzaga Prep (8-8) are tied for No. 5.
The regular season ends Saturday.
Elissa Ross, Casey Carlson and Shayla Bush combined for 35 kills in Ferris’ win at U-Hi. U-Hi led the first game 7-0.
Sara Hornor served six consecutive points in the third game as Mead swept Mt. Spokane.
Shadle Park broke from an 11-all tie in the second game on its way to defeating NC.
Kelsey Williams had nine digs and six kills as LC defeated CV.
Jamie Rydbom, Kelly Couch and Christa Brossman combined for 21 kills as Pullman (9-2 Great Northern League) defeated visiting Riverside 16-14, 15-8, 15-13 to pass idle Colville (8-2) into second place. Pullman plays at Colville on Saturday. Riverside is 0-12.
Girls soccer
Tanya Birchler had two goals and one assist, and Cheney (9-4, 3-1 Frontier League) defeated visiting Clarkston 11-0.
Freshmen Meghan Foland and Katie Bumgarner hooked up on the first two goals. The Bantams (0-8, 0-4) had no shots on goal.
Lacey Nedrow scored at 10 minutes as East Valley (8-2-3, 4-0) defeated visiting West Valley 1-0. WV is 4-7-2, 1-3.
Larissa Mueller scored twice as visiting Riverside (10-0 GNL) tuned up for Thursday’s home match against Pullman (9-1) with a 3-0 win at Lakeside.
Fourth-place Lakeside (5-5-1) ends its regular season at third-place Medical Lake (7-3) on Thursday.
Alison Biggs scored her 14th and 15th goals, both on breakaways, and Stephanie Spero added two first-half goals as ML defeated visiting Deer Park 6-1. The Stags are 1-10.
Cross country
Lakeside’s boys and Colville’s girls wrapped up 7-0 GNL seasons.
Trevor Smith, who ran 17 minutes and 26 seconds for 3.1 miles, led a 1-2-3 finish for Lakeside, which defeated Newport (3-4) and Deer Park (0-7) at Newport.
Crystal Evans (20:38) led Colville past Pullman (2-5) on the 3.1-mile course at Pullman. Medical Lake (0-7) has an incomplete team.
Newport’s girls (5-2) and Lakeside (4-3) tied at 28, but Newport won the tiebreaker when No. 6 runner Amber Schaffer outkicked Lakeside’s No. 6. Deer Park’s girls finished 1-6.
Riverside’s boys (5-2) and girls (6-1) defeated visiting Chewelah at Bear Lake County Park. Riverside’s James Taylor (17:32 for 3.1 miles) sprinted away from teammate Ian Hansen at the end. Nora Zaprzalka (21:01) won her final home meet, reversing a previous loss to teammate Katie Prichard.
Chewelah’s boys and girls both finished 3-4.
Colville’s boys (6-1), with four runners in the top five, swept Medical Lake (3-4) and Pullman (1-6). ML’s Jeff Wendt (16:49) won by 16 seconds over Colville’s Cory Rebmann.
John Russell and Laura Halverson won titles and led Freeman to team titles at the Northeast A League championships at Freeman High.
Russell ran 15:39 for 2.95 miles. Halverson ran 19:55.
