Panhandle Picks With Greg Lee
I didn’t need any help from my teammates. I just need one word to describe last week.
Perfect will suffice.
For the first time this fall and first time since a year ago the same week, yours truly got ‘em all right.
The guest, Dick Haugen, the golden vocal chords of KVNI, missed 3 of 10.
With two weeks remaining, the Scribe is declaring victory. The scoreboard reads: Scribe 62 of 75 (.827, Guests 57 of 75 (.760).
My guest this week is St. Maries athletic director Curt Carr, who resigned as head football coach last year. He’ll try to bring the reporter down to earth.
In an attempt to make this week interesting, you’ll notice among the “other” games that I’m picking Clark Fork to avenge its earlier 34-32 loss to Falls Christian. If the Wampus Cats (by the way, that’s one of the best nicknames in the state) win, that would create a tie for the league championship. A Kansas Plan tiebreaker would be needed to decide the league’s state playoff berth.
The schools attempted to set up a tentative date/site in the event of a tie. Falls Christian wants to wait until the game is over. The Eagles hope the issue is moot after their game on Friday afternoon.
Coeur d’Alene at Post Falls: Pinch me. I must be dreaming.
The early season nightmare for the Vikings has been replaced by Cinderella-like dreams. Believe it or not, CdA earns a state playoff berth with a win Friday.
The Post Falls defense is tough. The Trojans did a fine job containing Lake City quarterback Chad Troxel last week.
CdA has been plagued with injuries. But the Vikings have the deciding factor in what should be a down-to-the-wire finish. Speedy running back Pat Goodwin will break loose for the deciding score. CdA 17, Post Falls 13.
Guest: I know both head coaches from when they played in high school. But one (Post Falls’ Jeff Choate) played for me. So I’m selecting Post Falls. PF 21, CdA 20.
St. Maries at Grangeville: Another key Intermountain League game. St. Maries quarterback Trent Duffey and his capable receivers find a way to top the Bulldogs on the road.
Grangeville’s offense is too one-dimensional. St. Maries 35, Grangeville 28.
Guest: Grangeville’s running game vs. St. Maries’ passing game. The game is at Grangeville and will be close. But St. Maries’ defense will be the key. St. Maries 28, Grangeville 27.
Sandpoint at Lewiston: If CdA beats Post Falls then Sandpoint is playing for pride the rest of the season.
The Bulldogs’ inconsistency is too much to overcome. Lewiston wakes up from tiny scare from CdA last week. Lewiston 40, Sandpoint 17.
Guest: No love lost in this game. Sandpoint will be fired up, but it is at Lewiston. (Lewiston coach) Nick Menegas helped me out when I got started in coaching. He’s getting old (ha, ha), but he is sly as a fox. Lewiston 35, Sandpoint 21.
