Leslie ‘Verne’ Mabbott Spokane
Memorial service for Leslie LaVerne “Verne” Mabbott, 81, will be at 1 p.m. today at Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Mabbott, who was born near St. Maries died Saturday.
He graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1935, and with the highest honors from Washington State University in 1940 with a bachelor’s degree. He also received a master’s degree from WSU.
Mr. Mabbott taught at Omak (Wash.) High School from 1941 to 1948, and later moved to Spokane, where he taught social studies at Rogers High School for 26 years.
He married Sylvia Rauch in 1957.
He also coached varsity tennis for 10 years, retiring from Rogers in 1974. He continued to play and promote tennis and was part of a league of ex-tennis coaches and player for 38 years. From 1949 to 1961 he was an all-city tennis pro in Spokane.
While at Rogers he set up the Senior Citizens Gold Gard Program adopted by all the city high schools and the Associated Student Body Ticket Program for all Spokane high school students.
He is survived by his wife; and a sister, Margaret Slichter of Wenatchee.
Anna Shoaf Nampa, Idaho
Graveside service for Anna Reilly Shoaf, 95, will be at 10 a.m. today at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Shoaf, who was born in Spangle, died Saturday.
She graduated from Spangle High School and Cheney Normal School and taught in the Spangle and Plaza School districts.
In 1926 she married Fred Shoaf and played the banjo with the Plaza Band, playing for many Grange dances throughout Spokane and Whitman counties. She also played with the Joy musical group in Spokane, which performed in North Idaho and for the State of Washington Attorneys Association Christmas parties for many years.
Mrs. Shoaf also volunteered to play and teach at the school for the blind in Spokane and the Cheney Nursing Home, where she lived until 1990, when she moved to Nampa.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a member and officer of the Plaza Grange, the Plaza Sewing Club and the Phythian Sisters, Rosalia Chapter.
Her husband died in 1981.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Lou Thomason of Caldwell, Idaho; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
John Denver Wilson Spokane
Funeral Mass for John Denver Wilson, 71, will be at 2 p.m. today at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Wilson, who was born in Phillippi, W. Va., died Saturday.
He was a mill worker for many years and was a member of St. Aloysius Parish.
Mr. Wilson had been a resident of Spokane for 50 years.
Survivors include his wife Peggy; six sons, Cyril Vinneau and John Wilson, both of Spokane, Gary Vinneau of El Paso, Texas, Terry Sulpizio of Portland, Tony Sulpizio of Honolulu, and Bill Sulpizio of Lakewood, Wash.; two daughters, Marian Koontz of Coeur d’Alene and Shannon Krebsbach of Federal Way, Wash.; a sister, Vera Gibson of Bridgeport, W. Va.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane, the St. Vincent dePaul Society or the American Red Cross.
Wilma (McGee) James Spokane
Memorial service for Wilma (McGee) James, 81, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. James died Friday.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, F.R. James; two daughters, Joan Corliss of Seattle and Patty Yamashita of Portland; two stepsons, Jerry James of San Francisco and Tom James of Tigard, Ore.; two sisters, Doris Harshbarger of Greenacres and Vera Hoagland of Ellsworth, Maine; eight grandchildren and five stepgrandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
Dale Vaughn Spokane
Private memorial service for Dale F. Vaughn, 76, will be today at Fairmount Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime resident of Spokane, Mr. Vaughn died Friday.
He graduated from North Central High School in 1940 and served in the Army during World War II.
Mr. Vaughn worked for the Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern railroads. He retired in 1983.
Survivors include his wife Jean; a daughter, Sandy Williamson, two sons, Steve and Tom Vaughn, and a sister, Loucille Ashlock, all of Spokane; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Georgia Green Spokane
Visitation for Georgia Green, 75, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Funeral is planned for 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
Mrs. Green, who was born in Henderson, Ky., died Sunday.
She moved to Spokane in 1962 and worked as nursing assistant in several nursing homes, including South Crest and Garden Terrace Manor. She retired in the early 1970s.
Mrs. Green was a member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church.
Her husband, Levi Green, died in 1981.
Survivors include a daughter, Wanda Green of Cheney; a brother, James Posey of Chicago; a sister, Anna Sanders of Milwaukee, Wis.; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Manuel Hoffman Spokane
Memorial inurnment for Manuel Vern Hoffman, 58, will be held at a later date. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hoffman, who was born in Oregon, died Wednesday.
He served as a medic in the Air Force and lived in Vancouver, Wash., from 1970 to 1974. He then moved to Spokane, where he worked as an orderly in various hospitals.
Mr. Hoffman was a member of Central Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Survivors include his father, Manuel Hoffman;, and two brothers, Gerald and Gene Hoffman.
Antoinette Davidson Spokane
Memorial service for Antoinette ‘Toni’ Davidson, 70, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Davidson, who was born in Commerce, Okla., died Saturday.
She was raised in Illinois and lived in Nevada and California before moving to Spokane in 1960.
Mrs. Davidson was active in square dancing and started her own business, Toni’s of Spokane, specializing in design of square dancing costumes. She became involved in designing and sewing wedding dresses and formals as well. She also did alterations for 20 years for the Betty Bone Boutique.
Two husbands, Murray Davidson and Richard Willey, preceded her in death.
Survivors include three daughters, Terry Bonner, Roberta Ajax and Diane Moriarity, all of Spokane; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
William Magee Seaford, Va.
Visitation for William J. Magee, 75, will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Burial will take place at Forest Cemetery Veteran’s Section in Coeur d’Alene.
Mr. Magee, who was born in Paterson, N.J., died Tuesday.
He moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1945 and worked at Northwest Timber until retiring.
Mr. Magee later moved to Seaford.
He was a 40-year member of Coeur d’Alene Eagles Lodge 486, a member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 889, and past district commander for the VFW. He was also a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Loretta; two sons, Mike Magee of Spokane and Dean Magee of Coeur d’Alene; a daughter, Kathy Carden of Seaford; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

James Humphrey Spokane
Graveside service for James R. Humphrey, 81, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Humphrey, who was born in Blue Creek, Wash., died Monday.
He had lived in Post Falls for 25 years and worked as a mechanic on heavy equipment and road construction sites before moving to Spokane.
Survivors include two sons, James O’Hara of Puyallup, Wash., and Kenneth Humphrey of Coeur d’Alene; a daughter, Nora Amicarella of Spokane; a brother, Jack Humphrey of Spokane; two sisters, Melba Marshall of Deer Lodge, Mont., and Lois Sanders of Spokane; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Leslie Leppell Spokane
Memorial service for Leslie H. Leppell, 71, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Bassano, Alberta, Mr. Leppell died Sunday.
He served in the merchant marine and worked for Gonzaga University and Bilt-Rite Armature for several years.
Mr. Leppell also was a wheat farmer most of his life and was a resident of Spokane for 68 years.
Survivors include a son, John Lepell of Spokane; a daughter, Renee Leppell of Asotin, Wash., two brothers, Cal Leppell of Spokane and Kenneth Leppell of Puyallup, Wash.; five sisters, Norma Cochran of Spokane, Ruby Hart of Coeur d’Alene, Lila McPheters of Republic, Wash., Valeta Canada Smart of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Dawn Fuller of Riverside, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
