First quarter WSU 7, Illinois 0 Rob Meier 52-yard fumble return, Rian Lindell kick. Jonathan Nance came around the left side unblocked, nailed Fighting Illini quarterback Mark Hoekstra causing the ball to pop loose. Meier, who was rushing from the middle, picked up the ball and rumbled into the end zone.

Nian Taylor 12 yards from Steve Birnbaum, Rian Lindell kick. Eighty yards on seven plays in 3:33. On a first-and-10 from the Washington State 42, Kevin Brown broke to the outside, picked up a block from Rob Rainville and went 41 yards down the sideline. Following two DeJuan Gilmore running plays, Birnbaum found Taylor, who stopped and waved as three Illini defenders went by and then walked into the end zone.
Second Quarter WSU 14, Illinois 7
Steve Havard 11-yard run, Neil Rackers kick. Thirty-nine yards on five plays in 57 seconds. Following a Gilmore fumble, which was caused and recovered by Danny Clark, at the WSU 39, Havard ran the ball 17 yards and Hoekstra followed with a 10-yard completion to Michael Dean. From there Havard took it in.

Rackers 46-yard field goal. Fourteen yards on eight plays in 1:51. After a minus-1-yard punt by WSU, the Illini took over on the Cougars 44. The Illini could only manage one first down and had to settle for the field goal.

Rian Lindell 52-yard field goal. Five plays 39 yards in 45 seconds. The Cougars took possession at their 26 with 46 seconds left in the half. Birnbaum hit Love Jefferson with a 27-yard strike and then Adam Davis with a 12-yard bullet to set up Lindell.

Gilmore started the drive with a 20-yard reception, Leaford Hackett added one of 16 yards and Brown pushed the Cougars deep into Illinois territory with a 16-yard run up the middle. With a first-and10 at the Illini 11, the Cougars stalled and called on Lindell.
