Settlement Reached In Elba Wildfire
Cassia County officials have reached an agreement to repay the U.S. Forest Service and private landowners for costs incurred over a wildfire started by weed supervisor Gordon Edwards in August 1996.
The blaze started when a controlled burn to eradicate the noxious weed Medusahead on the Elba mountain range jumped a fire line and burned out of control.
The settlement requires the county pay $7,500 a year for 10 years to the Forest Service to fight noxious weeds on federal lands. Idaho County Risk Management Program officials say settlement amounts for the Forest Service and others with claims would not be made public.
