Edwin Deppner Rocklyn, Wash.

Edwin Deppner celebrates his 103rd birthday today.

Deppner was born Sept. 21, 1895, in Volynia, Russia. He has lived in the Davenport area for 96 years. His father homesteaded in Rocklyn, Wash.

Mr. Deppner has been a farmer all of his life. He also worked for the railroad, local grain warehouses, as a school bus driver and as a substitute mail carrier. He served in the military during World War I.

He married his wife Emily in 1923. She died in 1978.

They had four children: Sugar Kirk, Edwina Mielke and Art Deppner, all of Davenport, Wash.; and the late Don Deppner.

He has 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Deppner is notable in that he still lives alone with three cats, attends church each Sunday, is an avid Bible reader and will occasionally cut hay with a hand sickle.
