Parade Protester Pleads Not Guilty
A 57-year-old who protested against the Aryan Nations’ summer parade pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a charge of obstructing justice.
Police arrested Gary A. Edwards of Coeur d’Alene on July 18 when he refused to surrender the stick holding his protest sign. On Tuesday, Edwards asked a judge to return the $300 bail he had posted and schedule a jury trial.
City police, Kootenai County sheriff’s deputies and Idaho State Police swept the streets looking for potential trouble before the parade down Sherman Avenue. A sheriff’s deputy asked Edwards to give up the stick holding his sign because it could be used as a weapon.
Edwards refused and was arrested. A trial date has not yet been set.
