Amanda Coetzer, who filled the Family Circle Cup with cheers a year ago, left the stadium in disappointment as only the second defending champion in 27 years to lose before the quarterfinals.

Coetzer fell to No. 16 Henrieta Nagyova 6-2, 6-3 to start a dreary, rain-filled third round.

Monica Seles, the world’s third-ranked player, also loss, falling to Elena Likhovtseve 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
