Schnyder Gives Up
Because of an incident of what she called “stalling” by her foe last year, Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder offered little resistance while losing to Anna Kournikova in the quarterfinals of the Bausch & Lomb tennis tourney at Amelia Island, Fla.
After an obvious display of disinterest in the match, Schnyder admitted she didn’t want to play Kournikova at all in bowing 6-0, 6-2. Other winners included Ruxandra Dragomir, Conchita Martinez and Monica Seles. Martinez ousted defending champion Mary Pierce 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
At Madras, India, top-seeded Carlos Moya of Spain conceded his match in the quarterfinals of the Gold Flake Open, losing his chance to become the world’s No. 1 player.
Moya trailed Germany’s Rainer Schuttler 1-6, 0-3 before retiring with a blistered thumb. He had to reach the final to surpass Pete Sampras and reach the top spot in men’s tennis.
At Oeiras, Portugal, No. 3 seed Marcelo Rios beat No. 5 Gustavo Kuerten 6-4, 6-3 and will meet Todd Martin in the semifinals of the Estoril Open.
The other semifinalists are Albert Costa and Jerome Goldmard.
