Virginia Strand Spokane
Visitation for Virginia C. Strand, 90, will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Private graveside service will be held at Riverside Memorial Park.
A longtime Spokane resident, Mrs. Strand died Monday. She was born in Seattle.
Mrs. Strand graduated from North Central High School and received her bachelor’s degree in education from Cheney Normal School.
She married Chester Strand in 1935.
Mrs. Strand began her teaching career on the Spokane Indian Reservation, later teaching at Wilson Elementary and Sacajawea Junior High before teaching for the West Valley School District. She retired in 1971.
She was a member of the Washington and Spokane education associations.
Her husband died in 1987.
Survivors include two sons, Douglas and Michael Strand, both of Spokane; a daughter, Patricia Hoen of Canby, Ore.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Edward Franke Newport, Wash.
Funeral for Edward Paul Franke, 96, will be at 11 a.m. today at ShermanKnapp Funeral Home in Newport. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at Greenwood Memorial Terrace in Spokane.
Mr. Franke, who was born in St. Paul, Minn., died Saturday.
After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps for four years. He then served with the Air Force for 30 years, retiring as a master sergeant.
In 1939 he married Mabel Lagerquist.
Mr. Franke moved to Spokane in 1953, where he was a member of the Lonely Hearts Bowling League.
He moved to Newport after the death of his wife in 1994.
Survivors include three daughters, Marlene Mercado of Spokane, Rita Little of Newport and Paulette Malinovsky of Tulsa, Okla.; a son, Richard Franke of Spokane; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Maburn `Smoky’ Jacobs Spokane
Funeral for Maburn H. “Smoky” Jacobs, 64, will be at 1 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.
A 28-year Spokane area resident, Mr. Jacobs died Sunday. He was born in Clarendon, Texas.
Mr. Jacobs founded Jacobs Upholstery in Spokane in 1975.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Patricia; six children, David and Darby Jacobs, both of Veradale, Donna Phipps of Greenacres, Dean Jacobs of Newman Lake, Dailene Anderson and Dee Jacobs, both of Seattle; two brothers, Kermit Jacobs of Spokane and Orville Jacobs of Clovis, N.M.; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Edward Jilek Spokane
Vigil for Edward J. Jilek, 41, will be at 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Charles Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery in Birchwood, Wis.
A 10-year Spokane resident, Mr. Jilek died Friday. He was born in Wisconsin.
Mr. Jilek served as a pilot in the Air National Guard.
Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Jean; a son, Gregory Jilek of Spokane; his mother, Kathryn Jilek of Birchwood; two brothers, John Jilek of Birchwood and Jeff Jilek of David, Ill.; and a sister, Libby Myers of Rock City, Ill.

Iris Campbell Deer Park
Graveside service for Iris Irene Campbell, 85, was Monday at Spokane Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Campbell, who was born in Greenwood, Mo., died April 7.
She graduated from Pleasant Hill (Mo.) High School in the early 1930s and worked in fruit orchards in California and Washington for many years.
Mrs. Campbell moved to Deer Park from Niland, Calif., several years ago. She was a member of the Deer Park Community Church.
Her husband, Herbert, died in 1989.
Survivors include two sisters, Loretta Whisman of Deer Park and Louella Spinning of Spokane, Mo.
Lillian (Nauditt) Day Spokane
Visitation for Lillian R. (Nauditt) Day, 96, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.
Born in Ritzville, Wash., Mrs. Day died Sunday.
She ws a 55-year Spokane resident and worked at The Davenport Hotel and the Coeur d’Alene Hotel in her youth.
Mrs. Day was a homemaker and a member of the Methodist faith.
Her husband of 26 years, Robert, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Dick Day; two daughters, Roberta Gustafson and Betty Beck; and four grandsons.

Gerald Bass Spokane
Visitation for Gerald E. Bass, 79, will be from noon to 6 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
A 75-year Spokane resident, Mr. Bass died Monday. He was born in Worley, Idaho.
Mr. Bass graduated from North Central High School and worked as a painter.
He later worked for Kaiser Aluminum Trentwood for 31 years.
Mr. Bass was a member of the United Steel Workers Union.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Marguerite; and a sister, Geraldine Modeland of Spokane.

Sylvia Eastburn Spokane
Visitation for Sylvia L. Eastburn, 92, is planned for 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pines Cemetery.
A 50-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Eastburn died Monday. She was born in Missoula. Mrs. Eastburn graduated from the University of Montana and later moved to Spokane. She taught at Central Valley High School for many years and retired in 1954.
Her husband, Clarence Eastburn, died in 1992.
Survivors include a niece, Janet Lindhorst of New York, and a grandniece, Valerie Cadieu of the Tri-Cities.
Waldo `Walt’ Meyer Spokane
Memorial service for Waldo A. “Walt” Meyer, 72, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran Church. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Meyer, who was born in Reardan, Wash., died Thursday.
He graduated with a degree in economics from Eastern Washington University and went on to post-graduate school at Whitworth College.
Mr. Meyer served with the military during World War II in the Philippines and Japan.
He retired from working as the general foreman at Kaiser Aluminum Mead Works in 1985 after 38 years.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; a son, Michael Meyer of Spokane; two brothers, Ernest Meyer of Mesa, Ariz., and Gerhart Meyer of Anchorage, Alaska; and one granddaughter.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church, Hospice of Spokane or to the American Cancer Society.
Beulah Strott Spokane
Funeral for Beulah Faye Strott, 78, was Monday at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial was at Fairmount Memorial Park.
Mrs. Strott, who was born in Colorado Springs, died Thursday.
She moved to Spokane in 1974, after the death of her husband, Nick Strott.
Mrs. Strott worked at Spokane Legal Services and was involved with the Camp Fire Boys and Girls.
Survivors include a son, Ray Looper; a sister, Lois Simons; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Henry Nicholls Davenport, Wash.
Memorial service for Henry D. “Hank” Nicholls, 68, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport.
Mr. Nicholls, who was born in Spokane, died Monday.
He graduated from Davenport High School in 1949 and worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Lincoln County Road Department for 42 years.
Mr. Nicholls was a member of the Davenport First Presbyterian Church and was a community volunteer in Lincoln County for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Lorene; a son, Nick Nicholls and a brother, Bill Nicholls, both of Davenport; and one granddaughter.

Andrew Pirello Kent, Wash.
Memorial service for Andrew J. “Andy” Pirello, 88, was Tuesday at Yahn and Son Funeral Home in Auburn, Wash. Inurnment was at Mountain View Cemetery in Auburn.
Mr. Pirello, who was born in Spokane, died Saturday.
He married Angie Juliano in 1937 and was a farmer in the Spokane area for many years. He retired in 1986.
Mr. Pirello was a member of the Inland Empire Farmers Association.
He moved to Kent five years ago.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Joseph Pirello of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Carmon Pirello of Maple Valley, Wash.; a daughter, Kathleen Marie Nelson of Kent; three brothers, Charles, Wirt and Frank Pirello, all of Spokane; a sister, Mary Pignanelli of Auburn; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dale Storment Endicott, Wash.
Visitation for Dale W. Storment, 84, will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Thursday at Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash. Funeral is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Endicott. Burial will be at the Endicott Cemetery.
Mr. Storment, who was born in Winona, Wash., died Sunday.
He graduated from Winona High School in 1932 and worked on area farms and the family farm near Winona.
Mr. Storment married Ella Philpott in 1939 and took over the family farm operation. He retired in 1976 and moved to Endicott.
He was a member of the Wheat Growers Association of Endicott, serving on the board of directors.
Mr. Storment also was a member of the Winona Grange, Lutheran Brotherhood and Trinity Lutheran Church in Endicott.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jim Storment of Endicott and Bob Storment of Gig Harbor, Wash.; a sister, Lena Honn of Benge, Wash.; two brothers, Cecil Storment of Spokane and Gene Storment of Pasco; and six grandchildren.

Leo Billings Spokane
Private service will be held for Leo L. Billings. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Spokane, Mr. Billings died Sunday. He was 77.
He grew up at the Hutton Settlement and graduated from West Valley High School.
Mr. Billings served with the Marine Corps during World War II and received a Purple Heart.
He later worked as a printer in the Spokane area for 20 years.
Mr. Billings was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.
His wife, Louise, died in 1989.
Survivors include a daughter, Janet Lorentz, and a brother, James Billings, both of Spokane; and one grandchild.

Elwood Brugger Spokane
Graveside service for Elwood L. Brugger, 85, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Riverside Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A 65-year Spokane resident, Mr. Brugger died Friday. He was born in Walla Walla.
Mr. Brugger retired from working in maintenance for Bakers Union Local 74 in 1976.
He was a member of Good Sams Club.
Survivors include his wife, Kalora; two sons, John Brugger of Spokane and David Brugger of Elk; and a sister, Marjorie Chenowith.
Mary Brodie Tacoma
Rosary for Mary Magdaline Brodie, a former long-time Colfax resident, will be at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Colfax. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will follow at the Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Brodie, 95, died Sunday.
She was born in Colfax and graduated from St. John Academy in 1920. She attended Eastern Washington State College for one year, receiving a lifetime teaching certificate.
Mrs. Brodie taught in schools near LaCrosse, Wash., and Pullman.
In 1931 she married John Brodie.
She later returned to college, earning a four-year degree in teaching from Eastern. She began teaching at the Hamilton School in Colfax in 1942, retiring after many years.
Mrs. Brodie kept house for priests in their parish homes in both Spokane and Tacoma for several years, and taught religious education classes at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Colfax.
She was active with the FISH program, volunteering to prepare meals on holidays for prisoners at the Whitman County Jail. She also helped teach English as a second language to Cuban residents in Colfax.
Mrs. Brodie was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Altar Society, the Catholic Daughters of America, American Legion Auxiliary, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and Athenaeum Club. She was a member and served on the board for the Council on Aging.
Her husband, John, died in 1955.
She moved to Tacoma three years ago.
Survivors include two sons, Samuel Brodie of Bakersfield, Calif., and Michael Brodie of West St. Paul, Minn.; two daughters, Ann Foster of Tacoma and Jean Earls of Azle, Texas; nine grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Vera Terry Spokane
Service for Vera Francis Terry, 81, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A longtime Spokane resident, Mrs. Terry died Friday. She was born in Blackfoot, Idaho.
She married Donald Terry in 1944 and worked as a comptometer operator at The Crescent department store for several years.
Mrs. Terry had been living at Manor Care Home for the past month.
Her husband died in 1995.
She is survived by a brother, Edward Flemister of Baker City, Ore.
Ruby Layton Spokane
No service will be held for Ruby Ann Layton. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Layton, who was born in Devils Lake, N.D., died Sunday. She was 69.
She grew up and attended schools in Devils Lake, before moving to Spokane where she attended North Central High School.
Mrs. Layton was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband of 42 years, William; a daughter, Nancy Glinski, and a son, Kevin Layton, both of Spokane; and five grandchildren.
