Flu Can’T Stop Pf’S Mikles
Andy Mikles had the flu Thursday, but his pitching performance was anything but sickening.
Mikles struck out eight and walked two in eight innings, leading Post Falls to a 5-4 win over visiting Lakeland in non-league baseball.
Mikles allowed seven hits, five during Lakeland’s four-run second inning. Chase Williams had an RBI double for the Hawks (7-6), followed by RBI singles for Dan Dixon, Kevin Reese and Bryan Phelps.
Lakeland led 4-2 heading into the seventh, the two Trojans runs having scored on Ty Van Brunt’s home run in the first. But leadoff batter Matt Schrag of Post Falls (6-6) was hit by a pitch and Evan Sloyka followed with a home run.
Post Falls rallied with two out in the eighth. Sean Meadows walked and later scored on Clint Dobson’s bloop single.
In other non-leaguers, Joe Roccanova had three RBIs and Pete Montage added two more during a 3-for-4 day as Cheney (6-4) defeated visiting Lake City 8-6.
Reliever Ben Woodard (2-1) slowed down the Timberwolves after they led 5-0 in the top of the fourth. Sean Moglia of Lake City (6-7) had a three-run home run in the first.
Neil Litchfield hit a three-run homer in the seventh and finished with four RBIs to lead Lewiston (5-7) to a 6-3 win at East Valley (5-4).
Colin Moss pitched a complete game, striking out four, for his first varsity win. EV rallied in the seventh on Justin Lanphere’s solo home run and Allen Krant’s RBI double.
Birch Rose struck out four in two innings of relief, helping Bonners Ferry (7-4) edge visiting Wallace 7-6.
Kyle Cady had two RBIs for the Badgers. Wallace is 0-10.
Preston Blackburn and Craig Craviotto drove in three RBIs apiece to lead Timberlake (8-1) to a 12-9 win over the visiting Coeur d’Alene junior varsity.
Moscow (5-8) dropped a 12-1 game at Clarkston (7-3). No details were reported.
Softball
Monica Lange had a two-out, two-run single in the second, then scored on Brandi Brumley’s single as Lake City (8-3) defeated visiting Cheney 4-0 in a non-leaguer.
Kelly O’Hara added a two-out, RBI double in LC’s third. Bobbi Darretta struck out nine and ended rallies by the Blackhawks (5-4) with strikeouts in the first, second and sixth.
In other non-leaguers, Teea Stutheit laced a two-out, two-run home run over the left fielder’s head in the sixth, and Lakeland (10-2) edged Post Falls 2-1.
Paige Smith began the rally with a two-out double. The Trojans (0-7) had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh, but Loni Baumann recorded a strikeout and groundout.
Amy Waltrip’s third RBI drove in Malea Schumacher as East Valley (8-2) defeated visiting Lewiston 9-8 to complete a sweep.
Rebecca Triplett (5-1) won the 7-6 opener and finished the day with five hits. Terra Matsuda’s two-run triple tied the game in the seventh, and Cyndie Hulett followed with the winning single.
For Lewiston, Rachelle Peterson had two RBIs in the opener and Michelle Bausch hit a three-run home run in the second game.
Shasta Burnach pitched a five-hitter and tripled as Sandpoint (2-5) defeated visiting West Valley 6-4 in the first game of a doubleheader.
Leigh Williams threw a five-hitter in WV’s 9-1 second-game win. Monica Hilsabeck of the Eagles (4-5) homered in both games.
Rachael Kinservik (4-2) faced the minimum of 15 batters, missing a perfect game with a leadoff walk in the fifth, and visiting Kettle Falls (5-2) defeated Priest River 13-0.
Kinservik struck out 11. Lacey Jones had an RBI double and solo home run for the Bulldogs. The Spartans are 3-3.
GSL softball
Shanelle Test struck out nine and Amber Shields had a three-run double in the four-run sixth as Central Valley (4-3) knocked Lewis and Clark (6-1) out of first place with a 5-0 win at Hart Field.
Jennifer Schmitt tripled for CV. LC’s Kaylene Fountain struck out 13.
Also in the GSL, Tara Malmquist had an RBI double during a threerun second and Jessica Murray pitched a four-hitter as visiting Shadle Park (5-2) defeated Rogers 4-1 to snap the Pirates’ five-game winning streak.
Andrea McGrath added an RBI single for Shadle. The Pirates’ Courtney Davis tripled and scored in the second.
Nicki Meyer drove in three runs, two on a double in the fourth, and visiting University (7-0) defeated Mead 10-0.
Megan Owen (6-0) and Heather Bunkowske held the Panthers (2-5) to Sara Rhodes’ first-inning single. Mandy Christensen of the Titans added two RBIs.
Katie Bowles and Molly Bayne had two-run doubles during a six-run fourth as visiting Gonzaga Prep (2-5) defeated North Central 13-3 in six innings. The Indians are 0-7.
