Ewu Schedules A.D. Interviews

Two candidates, including Spokane native Scott Barnes, will interview next week for Eastern Washington University’s soon-to-be vacant position of director of athletics.

Selection committee chairperson Judith Siminoe announced Friday that Barnes, the athletic director at Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif., and Richard Smith, the associate vice president for university advancement at Wichita State, will visit the EWU campus and meet with her committee, which is seeking a replacement for Dick Zornes.

Zornes announced in late February that he will step down from his position on July 1.

Barnes lived in Spokane until he was 5 years old, and grew up in the Tri-Cities, where he attended Kennewick High School. After moving to California, he graduated from Liberty-Union in Brentwood.

Before arriving at Humboldt State in 1997, the Fresno State graduate served as associate athletic director for development and special projects at Iowa State University.

Smith, who has coordinated fund-raising programs at Wichita State since 1997, graduated from Northern Arizona University and worked for the Big Sky Conference school in various capacities from 1984 to 1997.

Siminoe said her committee hopes to name a new AD by May 7, but added the committee is currently considering whether to interview additional candidates.

UI to scrimmage in Lewiston

The University of Idaho football team will hold its third scrimmage of the spring at Lewiston High’s Bengal Field today at 11:30 a.m. Cost is $3.

Five former Lewiston Bengals are members of Idaho’s team. They are safety Brady Rice, linebackers Laki Ah Hi and Levi Frazier, cornerback Rick McCrery and defensive tackle Mike Jones.

The Vandals will conclude spring drills with the annual Silver and Gold game next Friday.

Eastern Washington University’s football team will conclude its second week of spring practices with a scrimmage this morning at Woodward Stadium in Cheney.

The Eagles hit the field at 10 a.m., with the scrimmage beginning at about 10:25 a.m.

The scrimmage, as well as the annual Red-White game on May 8 at 2 p.m., is free and open to the public.

Track sacked

Idaho has canceled the track and field meet scheduled for Sunday at the Dan O’Brien complex. UI’s men’s and women’s teams will, however, compete today at Washington State.

Soccer start-up

North Idaho College has adjusted its schedule for adding men’s soccer. The Cardinals will debut this fall instead of in 2000.

The Coeur d’Alene Soccer Club will pay program costs for the first year. NIC and the club will split the bill the second year and NIC expects to take over funding in the third season. Scholarships will be offered in the team’s second season.

NIC women’s head coach Bill Eisenwinter and assistant Dan Hogan will coach the men’s program.

Fisher moves on

North Idaho College sophomore forward Jodi Fisher has orally committed to play basketball for Carroll College in Helena.

Fisher averaged 6.5 points and 3.6 rebounds during the 1998-99 season.

Tough day for GU

Gonzaga’s women’s and men’s tennis teams were thundered in the opening rounds of the West Coast Conference tournament.

The Bulldogs’ sixth-seeded women got an 8-0 win from their No. 1 doubles team of Sarah Ust and Rachel Gillis, but lost to third-seeded Loyola Marymount 7-1 in Santa Clara, Calif.

The men, seeded seventh, were shut out 8-0 by second-seeded San Diego, the host.

3-ON-3 TOURNEY Soccer JAM! The Spokane Youth Sports Association, Skyhawks Academy and Brett Sports will stage a 3-on3 soccer tournament Aug. 14-15 at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex and Joe Albi Stadium. The 3-on-3 Soccer JAM! will feature four-member teams playing in different age divisions ranging from six to 18. Preliminary games will be held at the Merkel complex, with the finals in each age division scheduled to be played on the turf inside Albi Stadium, just prior to the United Soccer League’s national championship game, which will be hosted by the Spokane Shadow.
