Prep softball/baseball
Jamie Merrill pitched a one-hitter and Crystal Humphries hit her league-leading fourth home run, guiding Rogers to a 3-1, eight-inning win over visiting Central Valley in Thursday’s Greater Spokane League softball.
Humphries ended the game with no-out, two-run homer in the eighth. Crystal Perry also homered for Rogers (11-3, 10-3), which is tied for second place with Shadle Park.
Marcy Nauert’s fourth-inning double broke up Merrill’s no-hitter.
CV (10-5, 9-4) had its seven-game winning streak snapped.
Also in the league, Heather Bunkowske (3-0) struck out nine in first-place University’s 10-0 win at Mt. Spokane (4-10, 4-9).
Sara Steblaj of the Titans (15-1, 13-1) had three RBIs, including a solo homer in the sixth. The Wildcats’ Terah Summers was 3 for 3.
Tara Malmquist hit a two-out grand slam in the seventh, capping Shadle Park’s 8-3 win at Gonzaga Prep (4-11, 4-9).
Jessica Murray struck out six and pitched a four-hitter for Shadle (12-3, 10-3). Rebecca Dollar hit a three-run homer in the seventh for the Bullpups, and reliever April Skubinna struck out eight.
Candice Powers and Corina Ebat were both 2 for 3 and combined for six runs and five RBIs as visiting Lewis and Clark (10-5, 9-4) defeated Ferris 16-1.
LC’s Kaylene Fountain struck out eight. Ferris (4-12, 2-12) walked 14 Tigers batters.
Nicole Naslund’s two-run double in the sixth inning lifted Mead (6-9, 5-8) to a 5-3 win over visiting North Central (0-13, 0-13).
Anna Vagstad earned her first GSL win. Naslund also scored in the third, on Sara Rhodes’ triple.
Alison Keck struck out 10 in Pullman’s 6-1 win over visiting Colfax (5-6, 3-3) in the Great Northern League.
Keck and Kelly Couch had RBI doubles during a five-run fourth for the Greyhounds (11-2, 5-1).
Baseball
Kent Hibbard hit a three-run homer in the fifth, and Mead overcame visiting North Central’s nine-run fifth for a 16-11 win in the GSL.
NC had five hits, including John Forness’ two-run double, and Mead had four errors during the nine-run outburst that gave the Indians a 10-8 lead.
Mitch Calkins was 3 for 4, with a two-run single during Mead’s five-run fifth. The win left Mead (10-5, 9-4) tied for second place and North Central (8-7, 7-6) tied for fourth.
Also in the GSL, Cole Hockett had an RBI single in the seventh and scored on a two-out wild pitch as Mt. Spokane (9-5, 9-4) edged visiting University 13-12.
John Madsen had three-run homers in the sixth and seventh to give the Titans (4-11, 4-9) a 12-9 lead. Matt Binder had a two-run double in the Wildcats’ seventh, giving him four RBIs. Mt. Spokane’s Cole Young also had four RBIs on a pair of homers.
George Bell had seven RBIs, including a grand slam in the fifth, during Shadle Park’s 14-3 win at Gonzaga Prep (2-13, 2-11) that tied the Highlanders (8-7, 7-6) for fourth place.
Shadle’s Chet Womach added four RBIs helped by a two-run homer in the fifth. Justin Karle (3-3) struck out five and pitched a four-hitter. Two of the hits were by Prep infielder Garth Erickson.
Brad Moss had three RBIs, three stolen bases and a run during Central Valley’s 11-1 win over Rogers (6-7, 6-7) at Seafirst Stadium.
Kris White of the Bears (7-8, 6-7) struck out eight during his four-hitter, and was 3 for 5 with an RBI. Danny Crowley of Rogers doubled.
Josh Mills (4-1) struck out 10 and was backed by a 14-hit effort as Ferris (11-4, 11-2) defeated visiting Lewis and Clark 12-4.
Nick Bozo had a two-run double during the Saxons’ four-run first, and Eric Everson finished with three singles and two RBIs. Ferris had nine extra-base hits, with two doubles apiece for Bozo, Justin Drake and Mike Robinson. Colin Shields had two hits for the Tigers (4-11, 4-9).
