The Paul Bunyan Fun Run, sponsored by the St. Maries runner’s club, will be Sept. 4 at 8 a.m. the 5K walk/run begins and ends at the St. Maries High School gym parking lot. Bonner County commissioners finalized the appointments of five residents to the Sandpoint Airport Advisory Board Thursday. Terry McConnaughey, Sagle, and Paul Davis, Rapid Lightning Road, will serve terms through September 2002. Sandpoint resident J.P. Carver will serve until September 2000, and Barney Ballard and Ford Elsaesser, both of Sandpoint, will serve terms that end in September 2001.

Eight miles of Idaho 54 from Spirit Lake to Athol will be re-paved by the Idaho Transportation Department beginning Monday. The work is expected to be completed by the end of September. Work will be done 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Motorists can expect minor delays. Interstate Concrete and Asphalt of Coeur d’Alene is the contractor for the $1.3 million project.

Mike Gotch, a salesman at the Moscow Deranleaus’ Appliance and TV is the June Idaho winner of a four-state sales promotion sponsored by the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance’s Energy Star Program. Goth sold the most Energy Star qualified washing machines. He will choose between a weekend getaway in Sun Valley or $500 for his award.

The Bureau of Disaster Services is operating a transportation service with the help of community volunteers during the Milo Creek Improvement Project. An all-terrain vehicle will assist residents along the construction zone who have difficulty getting to their homes form the designated parking areas or have heavy loads to carry. Barbara Qualley of Newport has donated a 2-year-old Arabian gelding for the annual 4-H essay contest. The essay must include how the youngster plans to care for the animal, finance its care and training and why the horse would be important to the writer. The contest will be judged by County Commissioner Mike Hanson.

A new thrift and gift boutique has opened at the Corbin Senior Activity Center, 827 W. Cleveland. It is open Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and offers antiques, collectibles, clothing and household items.

The final member of one of the pioneering families that settled the Palouse has died. Elizabeth Blumenschein was buried here recently. She was the last member of the Volga German immigrants from Russia who established the area. Blumenschein emigrated in 1907 at the age of 7 months. She was one of 798 Russian-born Germans in the county in 1920.
