New Fire District Gets Public Airing
The Kootenai County commissioners have decided to schedule a public hearing on a proposed new fire district.
The Mica-Kidd Island Fire Association would like to become a tax-funded district but needs the approval of voters. First, the association must present its case to the commissioners in a public hearing. The commissioners will then decide whether to place the issue on the November ballot.
The association serves more than 400 members in an area between Cougar Bay and Loffs Bay on the west shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene. Currently, members pay dues of $75 per year. If a taxing district were formed, levy rates would be 96 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation.
The association wants to become a taxing district so it can hire a part-time chief and replace aging equipment, including fire trucks.
The public hearing date will be set at the commissioners’ regular meeting Aug. 31.
