Psu Routs Eagles

Five Portland State players scored in double digits as the Vikings coasted to a 79-57 win over Eastern Washington on Saturday at Portland.

It was Eastern’s sixth consecutive loss and dropped the Eagles to 6-14, 3-7 in the Big Sky Conference. PSU, a 72-59 winner at Eastern last Saturday, improved to 13-7, 8-2, putting itself in a good position to host the Big Sky Conference six-team tournament March 4-6.

The Vikings never trailed in the game and led 38-28 at the half. EWU, plaqued by turnovers all season, committed 17 in the first half, 24 overall.

Junior guard Tracy Ford led the Eagles with 14 points and junior reserve forward Julie Moore added 11. PSU reserve Robbie Nix led all scorers with 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

Saint Mary’s 69, Gonzaga 44

The Bulldogs stayed close for the first half, but the Gaels pulled away in the second half for a convincing victory at Martin Centre.

Gonzaga (7-15, 3-7 WCC) trailed by as many as eight points, 13-5, in the first 8 minutes, but tied the game at 29 in the closing minutes of the half on a layup by Kristin Deal.

A junior forward, Deal finished with 10 points for the Bulldogs. Reserve forward Heather Osberg led GU with 12 points. Saint Mary’s scored first in the second half and added onto its lead from there. Forward Tracy Morris finished with 18 points to lead a trio of Gaels in double digits.

Freshman Brianne Jolley, a former Lakeside High standout, came off the Saint Mary’s bench and scored five points in 12 minutes.

Whitworth 66, Pacific 47

Star Olson scored 17 points and Jamie Wakefield added 11 as Whitworth College came away with a win over Pacific at Forest Grove, Ore.

The win allowed the Pirates to split their weekend road trip and improve to 13-7, 9-4 in the Northwest Conference. Pacific dropped to 2-15, 1-11.

The game was tied at halftime 26-26 before Whitworth began to pull away. Whitworth relied on the 3-point basket, hitting 10 of 19, lead by Olson’s 5 of 9 3-pointers. Katie Werner was 3 of 4 from 3-point range.

Whitworth outrebounded Pacific 47-39 behind Myra Slwooko’s nine boards.

Amy George led the Sasquatch with 20 points on 7 of 16 shooting and Jen Clark added 18 on 8 of 16 shooting as CCS routed Blue Mountain (4-18, 3-5) at Spokane.

CCS (18-4, 6-2 NWAACC) pulled ahead early, leading 53-31 at the half. CCS put up 88 shots and converted 39. Blue Mountain committed 28 turnovers while Spokane finished with 10.
