Airport Security Repair Awaited

From Staff

Airport officials are working on a $1 million fix to ensure the facility’s security system is ready for Jan. 1, 2000.

Security is one of 92 systems officials found may be disabled by the year 2000 computer bug.

“We’ve known the system wasn’t going to work for some time,” said John Anderson, Boise Municipal Airport director.

The decade-old system controls access to terminal doors and fence gates, using computerized badges to track employees’ movements. Work on the upgrade began last year and should be completed within a few months.

The Federal Aviation Administration is paying $810,000 of the projected $1,075,000 cost. The airport will fund the remainder of the cost through terminal rents and landing fees.

Work still needs to be done to the airport’s administration network, weather forecasting system and heating system before they are considered Y2K compliant. The cost of those repairs is estimated at $100,000.
