Obituaries

Perry Johnson Spokane

Funeral for Perry T. Johnson, 79, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Burial will follow at the park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in Springfield, Ore., died Feb. 5.

He served in the Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II and after his discharge moved to the Colville and Kettle Falls, Wash., areas, where he worked as a logger.

He moved to Spokane in 1964 and began working as a line operator for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He retired in the early 1980s.

Mr. Johnson was a member of the Teamsters Union and the IBEW Local.

His wife, Mary, died in 1990.

Survivors include three sons, Frank Johnson of Missoula, Thomas Johnson of Grandview, Wash., and Steven Johnson of Zillah, Wash.; two daughters, Arlene Willey of Valley, Wash., and Christine Johnson of Four Lakes; two sisters, Ann Bates of Dallas, Ore., and Darlene Messingale of Spokane; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society.

Jessica Kuder Issaquah, Wash.

Funeral service for Jessica Kuder, 78, will be today at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sandpoint. Burial will follow at Westmond Cemetery near Sandpoint. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Kuder, who was born in Washburn, Wis., died Monday from cancer.

She was a longtime resident of Springdale, Wash., and recently had moved to Issaquah.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Reasor of Sandpoint and Kathleen Jeanneret of Issaquah, Wash.; a sister, Eloise Carroll of Olympia; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Kathryn Haunschild Spokane

Memorial service for Kathryn J. Haunschild, 74, will be at 11 a.m. today at Shadle Park Presbyterian Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 25-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Haunschild died Tuesday. She was born in Pocatello, Idaho.

Mrs. Haunschild was a homemaker.

Her husband, Larry Haunschild, died in 1996.

Survivors include two sons, Keith and Merle Biddleman; and a daughter, Valerie Gillmore.

Freda Gylling-Sluyter Spokane

Memorial service for Freda Gylling-Sluyter, 90, will be at 11 a.m. today at Audubon Park United Methodist Church. Private inurnment will be at the Colfax (Wash.) City Cemetery. Riplinger Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

A 35-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Gylling-Sluyter died Wednesday. She was born in Endicott, Wash.

Mrs. Gylling-Sluyter worked as a manager for a telephone company for several years.

She was a member of the Historical Society of Russians in Germany, Telephone Pioneers of America, Daughters of the Nile, Rebekah Lodge, American Association of Retired Persons, Corbin Community Center and Audubon Park United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Gylling of Spokane; two sons, Robert Gylling of Spokane and Howard Gylling of Burien, Wash.; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurses Association or Audubon Park United Methodist Church.

Marguerite Cloninger Spokane

Visitation for Marguerite L. Cloninger, 78, will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Cloninger, who was born in Lewiston, died Wednesday.

She graduated from Lewiston High School in 1938 and attended Brown and Keating Business College in Spokane in 1939.

In 1940 she married Albert Cloninger. During World War II, Mrs. Cloninger worked as a secretary with the Army in Spokane and the Navy Depot in Seattle.

She later worked for the Spokane Eye Clinic for 20 years.

Mrs. Cloninger was a member of the Phi Sigma Alpha, Glenrose Women’s Club, Order of the Eastern Star, Ladies of the Shrine, and the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Glen, Dale and Bart Cloninger, all of Spokane; two daughters, Yvonne DeBill and Carrie Dove, both of Spokane; two sisters, Kathryne Halverson and Dorothea Ness, both of Clarkston, Wash.; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Anton `Tony’ Monger Hayden Lake, Idaho

Service for Anton “Tony” Monger, 92, will be held today at 1 p.m. at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Monger, who was born in Starbuck, Minn., died Wednesday.

He grew up near Alamo, N.D., and later worked on a threshing crew.

He moved to Naples, Idaho, in the 1930s and married Esther Sundhagen in 1934.

Mr. Monger owned a farm and made railroad ties and later lived at the Continental Mine in Paradise Valley near Bonners Ferry, Idaho.

He moved to Coeur d’Alene in the early 1950s and owned a dairy farm. He settled in the Hayden Lake area, where he worked at a local sawmill until retiring.

Mr. Monger was a member of Coeur d’Alene Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years; a son, Roger Monger of Orofino, Idaho; two daughters, Deloris Christopher of Spokane and Arlene Gamalielson of Hauser Lake, Idaho; a sister, Esther Cannaday of California; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Life Care Center in Coeur d’Alene.

Helen (Conley) Wilson Phoenix

Funeral for Helen Dolores (Conley) Wilson, 68, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel. Burial will follow at the cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wilson, who was born in St. Maries, died Monday.

She graduated from the Holy Names Academy in 1948 and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Wilson moved to Arizona several years ago.

Survivors include her husband, Owen; two sons, Kevin and Kerry Wilson, both of Phoenix; her mother, Marjorie Hobkirk of Spokane; a sister, Lois Balko of California; and four grandchildren.

Marjorie Hansen Spokane

Private service for Marjorie Hansen, 80, will be held at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hansen, who was born in Kendrick, Idaho, died Thursday.

She worked as a telephone operator in Troy, Mont., for several years before moving to Spokane in 1942.

Her husband, Clarence Hansen Sr., died in 1971.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Kuchynski of Otis Orchards; a son, Clarence Hansen Jr. of Spokane; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Christine Peavey Spokane

Memorial service for Christine M. Peavey, 94, will be at 2 p.m. today at Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Peavey, who was born in Boardman, Ore., died Jan. 13.

She was raised in Walla Walla and in 1942 moved to Lewiston, where she worked as the first woman manager at J.J. Newberry’s.

In 1945 Mrs. Peavey moved to Spokane and worked at a Newberry’s store here until her retirement in 1949. She married James Peavy that same year. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Peavey was a member of the Westminster Congregational Church, where she was also a deaconess.

Survivors include a brother, Fred Stanton of Spokane; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Etta Hubbard Post Falls

Service for Etta Mae Hubbard, 78, will be today at 1 p.m. at English Funeral Home in Post Falls. Mrs. Hubbard, who was born in American Falls, Idaho, died Thursday.

She grew up in American Falls and later moved to Reno, Nev.

She married Harold Hubbard in 1948, and they lived in Rigby and Pocatello, Idaho, before moving to Blackfoot, Idaho, and then the Athol area in 1975.

In 1988 Mrs. Hubbard moved to Post Falls after the death of her husband.

Survivors include a son, Rett Hubbard of Pleasant Hill, Ore.; a daughter, Meg Aldendorf of Spokane; a friend, Fred Wright; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Laurence Estes Spokane

Visitation for Laurence Earl Estes, 87, will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

A 75-year Spokane resident, Mr. Estes died Thursday. He was born in Quill Lake, Saskatchewan.

He served with the Army during World War II and later retired from the Postal Service after 31 years.

Mr. Estes was the editor of the Postal Credit Union newsletter for many years. He was also a published poet.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Carol; a son, Ronald Estes of Spokane; a brother, Ernest Estes of Bonney Lake, Wash.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Oscar `Bud’ Hadley Sandpoint

Memorial service for Oscar “Bud” Hadley, 82, will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Sandpoint Elks Lodge with a wake to follow. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hadley, who was born in Waverly, died Wednesday.

He grew up in Sandpoint and worked in the Civilian Conservation Corp camps near Avery, Idaho.

Mr. Hadley served with the Army Air Corps in the Pacific during World War II.

He returned to the Sandpoint area and worked as a delivery truck driver for a bakery company before retiring from the Teamsters Union after many years.

Mr. Hadley was a member of the Sandpoint American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes; two daughters, Marjorie Tilley and Lois Hadley, both of Sandpoint; a son, Roger Hadley of Silverdale, Wash.; three stepchildren, Roger Elliott, Harry Elliott and Peggy Gabby; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Elks Rehabilitation Hospital or the Leo Hadley Rifle Range, in care of Bonner County Sportsmen Association.

Dorothy (Ruffell) McIntosh Mead

Private memorial gathering for Dorothy “Dottie” (Ruffell) McIntosh, 89, will be held at a later date. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McIntosh, who was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, died Monday.

She graduated from high school in Vancouver and in 1932 married Clifford McIntosh.

Mrs. McIntosh moved to the Spokane area in 1945, living here for several years before moving to California, where she managed various apartment homes.

She returned to the Spokane area in the late 1960s.

Mrs. McIntosh was a league bowler at Valley Bowl in the Spokane Valley.

Survivors include two sons, Donald McIntosh of Coeur d’Alene and Lawrence McIntosh of Twin Lakes, Idaho; a daughter, Nancyjean Johnson of Mead; eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Olmsted Spokane

Memorial service for Dorothy L. Olmsted, 89, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Moran United Methodist Church. Private inurnment will be at the Moran Cemetery. Spokane Cremation and Burial Service is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane-area resident, Mrs. Olmsted died Feb. 9.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1927 and later married Glen Olmsted.

A homemaker, Mrs. Olmsted was a member of the Moran Untied Methodist Church, Moran Homemakers Club, Moran Prairie Grange 161 and the Moran Community Ladies Aid.

Survivors include two sons, Donald and Arthur Olmsted, and a daughter, Violet Olmsted, all of Spokane; a brother, Arthur Knapp of Mead; 11 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Dudley Forster Spokane

Memorial service for Dudley G. Forster, 82, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

A 57-year Spokane resident, Mr. Forster died Wednesday. He was born in Glen Elder, Kan.

Mr. Forster worked in the maintenance division of Spokane School District 81 for many years.

He was a member of North Hill Christian Church and a member and past president of the Quarter Horse Association.

His wife, Kathryn, died in 1994.

Survivors include a daughter, Colleen Ferraro of Hendersonville, Tenn.; a brother, James Forster of Spokane; seven sisters, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Madeline Goede Post Falls

Memorial service for Madeline Grace Goede, 78, will be held later. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Goede, who was born in Santa, Idaho, died Thursday.

She lived in Coeur d’Alene and worked as a waitress at various local restaurants until moving to Odessa, Wash., in 1966.

Mrs. Goede managed a motel in Odessa for five years and in 1992 moved to Post Falls.

She was a member of the Post Falls Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She also was a seamstress and made crafts to aid the handicapped.

Survivors include her husband of 37 years, Weldon; a son, Bernard Oehrling of Spokane; a brother, Bernard Bretz of Snohomish, Wash.; two sisters, Mae Thornton of Coeur d’Alene and Blanche Shephard; and two grandchildren.
