Seniors Janell Wendle and Shasta Glotfelty provided the perfect one-two punch for Lewis and Clark.

Wendle, with three 3-pointers in the second quarter, scored 12 points, and Glotfelty had 18 working the inside to spark Lewis and Clark to a 61-49 win over visiting Gonzaga Prep Tuesday night.

“We moved the ball well,” Wendle said. “When the offense is working, the shots come easy. I knew if they came out on me, they were going to leave (Glotfelty) open. That’s a big mistake.”

Either way, Prep was doomed.

Prep is tied with Shadle Park for the final playoff spot, a game behind LC in the Greater Spokane League standings.

Wendle’s 3-pointer broke a 16-16 tie 2 minutes into the second quarter and was part of a 12-2 run that gave LC the lead for good.

The lead reached double figures just before halftime, but Prep rallied to close within two points three times in the third quarter. Freshman Sarah Bassett hit a pull-up jumper from the foul line late in the third quarter, Glotfelty opened the fourth with four quick points and Prep never recovered.

“I was a little slow at first,” said Glotfelty, who had two points in the first quarter. “I’ve got to get my head in the game. The coach gives me a good yell and I’m there.”

The Bullpups played without standout sophomore guard Juliann Laney, who has a back injury. The severity of the injury will be known today.

“They played gallantly,” Prep coach Mike Arte said. “Without Juliann, we struggled to get the ball up the floor and when we did, we didn’t make real good decisions.”

Posts Stephanie Housam and Stephanie DeLeo helped make up for the loss with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

“Without Laney, we pressed and didn’t let up,” LC coach Jim Redmon said. “If we could rebound and keep the pressure on, we had a chance. They’re so big, we felt we had to control the boards.”

With Glotfelty’s nine rebounds, LC was a plus-2 on the boards. The Tigers also had 16 assists on 19 baskets, led by Bassett’s five.

Courtney Phinney led the seventh-ranked Bears with 21 points in a lopsided victory over the visiting Pirates that saw CV make 61 percent of its field-goal attempts (39 of 64).

Reanna Jewell and Angela Wagner came off the bench to share 21 points for Central Valley, helped by scoring bursts in the first and fourth quarters, respectively.
