Schweitzer Mountain Resort is hosting a snow safety course Saturday to help ensure that young skiers have a safe visit to the ski area.

On Feb. 6, five teenagers were lost in a blizzard when they skied outside the ski-area boundaries and were forced to spend the night in snow caves.

Ski-area boundary markers may have been obscured by the deep snow, allowing the skiers to descend below the marked trails.

Ski-area boundaries will be one topic of the Mountain and Snow Safety Course. How to prepare for potentially dangerous situations in a mountain environment also will be discussed.

The class will be taught free to youngsters ages 8 through 18 by Shep Snow, owner of The Snow School Inc. of Sagle, Idaho.

The course begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Caribou Room of the Schweitzer Day Lodge. For more information, call 263-9555, or (800) 831-8810.
