Parking Ticket Bill Dies
Members of the House Transportation Committee weren’t convinced that Idaho needed a uniform parking violation enforcement law Monday, despite what one Kootenai County police captain had to say.
“It’s overkill,” said Rep. Tom Ridinger, R-Shoshone. “We already have parking laws.”
Parking violations are handled on the local level, but this legislation would have made regulation a state responsibility.
Kootenai County sheriff’s Capt. Ben Wolfinger said there is a problem in his jurisdiction with officers citing parking violations. Officers are required to give tickets directly to the owners of vehicles in violation, and that can cause problems, he said.
He said that uniform enforcement would allow his officers to cite the vehicles instead of having to track down owners.
Legislators voted 11-1 to kill the bill. Three North Idaho representatives, all from Kootenai County, voted against the bill.
