3 Sprague Students Receive Dar Honors

Jodi Smith and brothers Clay and Tim Wilkin, all students at Sprague High School, were honored by the Jonas Babcock Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for their volunteer efforts.

Smith, a senior, received the Silver Congressional Award for more than 300 hours of volunteer work, helping on fund raisers for the Eating Disorders Clinic and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Clay Wilkin, a senior, was cited by the DAR’s national board with the Mary Desha Medal for Youth for his record of service that spans over a decade. He was an original worker with the Sprague Centennial Plaza and still continues with its upkeep. He also has helped secure grants and rename the streets for the new 911 system. He is the first person in the state to receive this medal.

Tim Wilken, a freshman, received the Bronze Congressional Award, for his work with senior citizens and the environment. Among his achievements was mowing lawns, plowing snow and installing street signs for the new safety program.

Clara Demmer, Greenacres, was honored with the front page display of her poem “Loves Pledge” in “Outstanding Poets of 1998,” published by the National Society of Poets, Owings Mills, Md.

Mark Swain, a member of Boy Scouts Troop 764, earned his Eagle Scout, the highest rank awarded in Boy Scouts of America.

For his Eagle project, Swain landscaped the grounds of Zion Lutheran Church in Davenport, Wash.

Swain, a student at Davenport High School, is the son of Lee and Deborah Swain.
