Douglas Fir Beetle Focus Of Program

From Staff

Private landowners in the Kellogg area can learn about ways to deal with the Douglas fir bark beetle Tuesday.

Presentations on how to deal with beetle-damaged trees and protect other Douglas firs begin at 6 p.m. at the Kellogg Middle School. The U.S. Forest Service, Idaho Department of Lands, Idaho Forest Owners Association and University of Idaho Cooperative Extension are making presentations.

The program will be followed by an open house designed to deal with public concerns about Douglas fir beetles, which the Forest Service says are at record levels.

The Forest Service is asking for emergency authority to log 153 million board feet of timber in North Idaho and Eastern Washington to deal with the beetle outbreak. Such emergency authority would allow them to start logging before appeals are resolved.
